The Music Thread Strikes Back

fucking hell - 30 years! remember seeing them in the nec atrium hall on the original tour.

gave The National my first ever listen today on spotify. Boxer appears to be recommended by most. It was ok. Will listen again to see if it grows.

For spotify peeps, check out Living In Extraordinary Times by James. Magnificent, and the "bonus demo" tracks fit for me. Superb album. Trying to avoid overplaying it.

Good man on The National LJ. As a superfan, I'd recommend Alligator rather than Boxer - it's a stronger collection of songs. Boxer is great though. The rest of the albums are all very good (except their first which is shit), though I don't think anything measures up to those two.

Orri Páll Dýrason has quit Sigur Ros after an online accusation of rape.
Bolt out of the blue this one. His drumming on their last tour was absolutely immense. Indeed, it really stood out for me.
This makes Sigur Ros a 2 piece for now.

New Pinegrove album is out:

They've been sitting on it for a year after agreeing to a year-long hiatus resulting from a 'sexual coercion' allegation made towards the lead singer. I'm not sure exactly what went on as it's all been kept private between the two parties but I really hope he hasn't been doing anything shady as I bloody love this band.

I'm still grateful to SLA for bringing the band to my attention in the first place via this thread a couple of years ago.

:tiphat: I confess they've slipped off my radar so will try to give this a listen.

Can i ask the good people on here something and please don't take it in a condescending or patronising way, the songs that are posted on here. are they songs that are your faves at that moment in time, that define an era in your life or are etched into your very DNA.
Some on here are good, some interesting and some are simply awful, I know everyone has different tastes (Nimrod :) ) but I just wondered is each one on here important to each person ?

most of what I post is new stuff I’ve just heard and found interesting in some way. I probably buy 85+% of what I post. I do put up older stuff as well, usually when pissed but it would be dull just posting stuff most people already know imo. not sure about my taste, i’ll listen to anything I don’t think is shit, but I do like spiky guitar play.

Ok its pissing down and there's no football so I'm officially bored.
Don't know if its been featured on here before but lets hear about your first/favourite gig.......here's mine
1978 and I've just watched TOTP before going to pick my girlfriend up, for once there is a proper exciting rock band on. Talking to girlfriend (now wife) about it, she says they're on at the Civic in a few weeks.
So tickets bought we find ourselves flattened against the doors by a few thousand overexcited kids...some appeared to have got there straight after school as they've still got their uniforms on.
Once inside the music from the p.a.was loud...I'd only seen small pub bands before. Then we were treated to a great performance by the support Blazer Blazer....never heard of them before or since but enjoyed them.
Then the main act struck up. From the first chord of 'Riff Raff' this was the loudest thing I'd ever heard...loud but in perfect balance. Then followed the most exciting hour and a half I'd ever experienced. Bon prowling the stage with his feral presence, little Angus throwing himself all over the place including on top of the amps and even up on the balcony. All the time the rhythm section banging out the backline. I'm fascinated by Malcolm, legs akimbo, stood at the back knocking out those sublime rhythm riffs that hold all the craziness together. Came out of the hall at the end absolutely shattered with a lifelong love of what is now called 'Classic Rock' 40 years later, I've been to many brilliant gigs, listened to lots of different bands/artists but nothing has come close to that first AC/DC show.

I think my first gig was around '96 at the Civic. Suede (sans Bernard Butler unfortunately).

Slayer supported by Nuclear Assault Hammersmith Odeon September 1988 on the South of Heaven tour.

I was back at the Hammy O two weeks later for Metallica on Damaged Justice.

D:Ream, 1993 at the Civic. As you can see, I've always had impeccable taste.

Manics at the civic in 93 or 4 i think. One of Richie's last gigs. Blew my mind.
