The Music Thread Strikes Back

Legend of the Seagull Men is good, Danny Carey is one of my favourite drummers and I have a soft spot for Mastodon so it's a good collaboration for me.

Slayer have announced that their forthcoming world tour is the farewell and they are retiring. Gutted.

Must try and get tickets for me and micro when they come to the UK. I have to see them one last time (which I think takes me to something stupid like 19 times I will have seen Slayer)

Interesting list. I do like the roots, portishead, tribe called quest nine inch nails, beastie boys and public enemy. There are also numerous bands on there that I am supposed to like, or a lot of people encourage me to like.
Radiohead I've always struggled with ever since Kid A.

well not much a surprise radiohead in there given their total output in the period. better them than rem imo (though i'm a fan of the early rem but it's > 30 years ago now).

these things always subjective though it seems reasonable to be able to make a case for most of the other stuff in the list and after all these guys know their music. the best thing for me is seeing unwound in there.

of course if it was the nme i suspect you'd see a lot more of britpop type stuff in there, which is generally a bit shit.

I'm always bemused by the love bestowed on LCD Soundsystem by the music media.

know what you mean, though i'm not offended by them. i actually have an album, though i had no idea what it was without checking first, other than its the one with the song about daft punk on it.

i feel the same way about the flaming lips, though i appreciate they do great live shows.

Average ticket prices for big arena gigs have doubled since the late 1990s, the BBC has found.

Taking inflation into account, prices have risen by 27%.
Personally I avoid arena gigs. Not only because of the price, but also because they are more likely to be soul-less shite, with zero atmosphere.
Equally, smaller venues have gone up a fair amount. When I started attending gigs as a teenager, I'd pay about £6 for a ticket at the wulfrun. My mate bangs on about seeing ac/dc (with bon) for £3.50
I'd be surprised if you could get a civic ticket now (if it were open!) for less than £25.

I used to compare gig tickets to football ticket prices too. Wonder how much they used to be?

You want to get yourself up to the Sugarmill in Stoke LJ, can see some decent bands for £8-15.

Had a blast of the cd proper nimrod. It's (imo) the strongest collection I can recall you sending me. FUU is hilarious with its references. Hell of a lot of female vocals across the disc. Loved the alvvays track, so glad you didn't scrub it. Protomarytr track is great. The guerilla toss track is almost excellent, it's just missing a little something, I know not what. In fact, really liked every track, except one. Couldn't get into the girl ray track at all.

cheers. the GT track is brill but i know what you mean - you feel it's just missing greatness. the coming down ending maybe loses it a little.
looking forward to the dream wife album. they're certain to feature again this year cos heartbreaker is a great track from it i've already heard.
the girls are definitely rocking it for me at the minute.

anyway, walking back home late last night i got a blast of the moog cookbook's version of whole lotta love. but i still think this was their finest moment

Funnily enough, I finally listened to the winter CD over the weekend, or some of it at least before I was interrupted by bloody family!
On the back of that, I listened to the Dreamwife album on Spotify yesterday. Very good stuff.
