The Mental Health thread

Totally, I'm fat and slow but still did 5k. Just need to keep doing it now!

Should be really proud of that irrespective of the time. 5k might not seem a huge distance to regular runners but it’s a bloody long way to run non-stop if you haven’t done it for a while.

It’s a great distance too as it’s a really good barometer of fitness, doesn’t take too long out of your schedule to become a drag, and doesn’t put too much strain on the joints either. Well done, keep it up and enjoy it.

I wish I could run. But I’m at a point where I’ve got that many aches and pains elsewhere, I don’t want to add to them with knackered knees or ankles.

That’s wise. I stopped running about 3 years ago and miss it so much. Knees just got more and more sore, distances shorter, healing times between runs longer, fortunes on shoes, treatments etc but in the end… some people’s joints are less robust than others and you have to know when to call it a day.

Really miss it as it was the only form of exercise that didn’t seem a chore. Most importantly, as per Andy’s post, it’s fantastic for your mental health too

Don't run now as my knees won't take it and the Consultant warned me off that - do cycle a bit.

We all have issues (though not going to compare mine with those who have more serious medical conditions) but of late have realised that I have taken on too much (all voluntary with no money coming) and recognised that I wasn't doing anything to the level needed or what I wanted. Stress (and I'm a boring accountant type who doesn't normally have that) lack of proper sleep etc.

Had to offload something to relieve the pressure and had to give up something that I enjoyed doing and helped others even more vulnerable than I am to get to medical appointments as it was the only thing I could stop doing easily. When I can stop one of the others will go back to it.

I love to run. Great stress reliever. But injuries, weight gain, and age make it more and more difficult. Plus it was 26C and humid as hell at 7am this morning. So I walked instead. I know it was the wrong thing to do, but willpower decreases every day.

I love the idea that you're the only person in Texas who uses Celsius, and you refuse to change despite the fact that nobody around you understands what those numbers mean.

26? About 81F isn’t it? I know 38 is pushing 100, and 51 means you are in Death Valley

I use Celsius on this forum because that is what 99% of posters know and use. I wouldn't move to Mexico and then post in Spanish. But I am probably the only person in Texas who says 'football' instead of 'soccer', and that will never change.
26C is 79F. We did have our 1st 100F day of the year on Saturday (you are right, approx 38C), today is only 95F (35C).

Dude, the wrong thing to do would have been to stay at home. Nothing wrong with walking as exercise. My knees mean I will never run for fitness, but I'll walk every day I need to.

All in good fun, bud.

I'll remind you that it was the Brits who coined "soccer", not us! ;)

All good, Alan, just feeling tired.
Very few actually ask where the term 'soccer' came from - most give up after I explain that in 'proper football' you use your foot to kick the ball, not like your yankee version, etc.

I am walking most days. Been loving the local park, seeing the changes spring is bringing, watching the water in the teeny tiny stream that goes through the park etc. I watched my dad and a load of his mates get obsessed with running/jogging in the 80's and imo it did many of them harm, however each to their own.
As someone else mentioned, I have found that walking is great for clearing the head. I put the headphones in and just meander aimlessly in the woods as often as I can.
It slipped in the winter months, and with xmas I probably regained a bit of the weight I had lost (I don't weigh myself, but did see myself in a photo & realised a need to lose some timber). I started walking regularly, and did go down 2 belt notches last year. Am trying to get down 1 further belt notch, but that last one seems to be more difficult!

I love walking, got a cycle of my son last year and used that a bit as I had trouble with my foot. Foots better now and I've gone back to walking, much prefer it, hoping to get out in some big hills soon.
I guess whatever floats your boat is the right option as long as your getting exercise and enjoying it.

Used to run a lot - mainly 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons with the odd marathon thrown in. My last half was 2012 so it's been shorter stuff since then so I cycle now to compensate a bit and walk a lot particularly in the late autumn/winter. Whatever you do that gets you outside is good no matter how often so don't put yourselves down.

Tried jogging this morning. Lots of stretching beforehand but after 5 minutes felt a slight twinge and I now have my third calf strain of 2022. It has been a recurring problem for 20 years which I had thought I was over. That's life.

The pressure has really been building the past few months and I think I’ve finally cracked. Have a GP’s appointment today as I can’t carry on like this. If they offer medication I may have to give it serious consideration as I’m not sure self help books and councilling are going to cut it. I’ve had some rough spells during my life but this is something else!

You're doing the right thing, far too many of us just ignore it.

Good wishes to you Haggs. Be open and honest with your doctor, be willing to ask questions, and also keep doing the best you can for yourself & your family. You'll get there!

Well done, that’s brave, even the process of making an appointment takes courage. Often people accept and normalise their stress for a long time and only seek help when things break. It’s a terrible shame we have to go to those limits first but well done for speaking out and sincere best wishes going forward.
