The Mental Health thread

Once you get to your late 30s and early 40s, there is fuck all cool about drinking to excess.

I only really drink on matchdays now, I try to look after myself.

There's nowt good about buying two pints at a time for no reason or going to a (shit) pub every single day for no reason. You really don't need to do the latter, you have to go past your house from work to get to that pub. It's probably £50+ a week that could be used better elsewhere too. Did you actually sort out your driving licence in the end given you were (maybe still are) technically driving illegally? I'd rather have an actual licence for 10 years or whatever than have four pints in the fucking Western.

Stop drinking so much and I guarantee you'll feel better. I'm not being a preachy bastard because I know how annoying that is, and I still love a pint as and when, but seriously. That's the root cause. It was the case two years ago and it's the case now. Don't change that and nothing will change.

It isn't a shit pub. I fucking love the place.

I will deal with it how I want, by the way. I don't need to be read the lesson.

Well with respect, yes you do, you're in a MH thread complaining about feeling bad and that is quite clearly the issue.

Now you can do one of two things:

1) Ignore that, delude yourself it isn't an issue and carry on

2) Address it and try to fix it

Mate, people want to help you. But they can't if you don't want to be helped.

It could be the greatest pub in the world (it isn't), it doesn't change the core message, does it. You're in there every day for no reason. Trips works in a pub and I doubt he's in one as often as you are.

Anyway, that's my last word on it for now, if you want help (when you know full well that I had more than my share of issues with booze for a while) then I am there whenever you like, if you don't then carry on, you're a grown man.

I go in for one pint and to read a chapter of my book. I am driving for God's sake.

And when you get home?

Besides which, £3 a pint (probably more than that) x 5 = £15 a week = £60 a month.

When I get home is far more of what I am concerned about to be honest. Two years ago we had a system that worked where I went for my quiet pint and then came back and drank sparkling mineral water at home during the week. That is where I am thinking about going again. It would definitely help.

In that time I drank a LOT of sparkling mineral water! I was off the fags then as well. Looked like a house, but felt reasonably okay. I had one incident where we had to have an ambulance here because I went into a fit, but that was because I made an error of going from all to nothing. The Doctor at the time said that was absolutely NOT an option for me, and it had to be done gently as a reduction.

No-one is saying you can't have a drink full stop. Unless you personally think you can't trust yourself to self-moderate.

The key according to several people is nights off. 2 to 3 nights off a week and then units become arbitrary and largely irrelevant. Coffee is great for the liver as is artichoke so on drinking days drink coffee and eat artichoke. In 1979 the safe unit recommendation was 52! . I haven't been under the current recommended of 14 for well ever. But I have 3 nights off a week. Liver and kidneys normal. Tested yearly

Paddy, have you thought about going to AA?

When I had issues, the religious element of AA really put me off. But each to their own.

All Pad has to think is that he knew me in 2012 and he knows me now in 2019. Which one is better? The help is there 100% of the time, but you have to want it.

And get your driving licence sorted (and I will give you another SIM for that phone which is there so your friends can support you, and also so if there's an emergency you don't like, die. It isn't 1987)

Don't think anybody is reading you a lesson or telling you what to do. But mate, you're talking about things on an open forum, on a mental health thread. I'm presuming you're doing that because you would like some help.

The help is there. Dan has offered, I will offer. I've had, and do still have, battles with alcohol. I know how easy it is to turn to the bottle. I don't mean this to sound like I'm bragging, but I could tell you some stories involving booze that would shock anyone in here, so nothing you could tell me will alter my opinion. We're all here to help. Take it, don't take it, but stay safe.

Pads, I'd offer my support to you too.
I drink less than most, but I never drive if I have had a small drink in the previous 2 hours. After games I always have a soft drink if going home straight away, which means my last drink would've been 3 hours prior. I don't want any alcohol in my system if i'm driving.

I would also agree that frequently issues are more likely to arise at home. When pouring ones-self a glass, we only see one glass, not the actual measure. So we justify having "2 glasses", whereas in measurements they may be 4 or 5 glasses.

You and I sat before the bournemouth game and had a great chat, ranging on loads of subjects. You were happy, and made me laugh. We all want that paddy.

Where do you get your liver tested ?

A liver function test doesn't detect liver disease unless it is advanced. The liver battles on well after it is damaged

Yep. My wife has a very badly damaged liver from schistosomiasis. She passes all liver function tests no problem though.

You can still see elevated LFTs (liver function tests) even with a normal liver though. There is a risk of secondary disease to the liver with my illness, colitis. I have raised LFTs and always have.
