The Manager Sacked/Hired Thread 2022/23

Predicting which players will make good managers is extremely difficult. It requires a mix of skills both tactically and in man management. I think in some cases a good dose of luck too, so that you get the right group of players early in your career to build a reputation.

Absolute model professional who would demand the best from absolutely everyone, knows the game inside out, has played and delivered in the biggest games / competitions in the world.

He's developed his game and understanding of the game throughout his career.

There is that clip of him somewhere getting João Moutinho to take a penalty, he knew exactly what to say to get João to step up.

I totally get the petulance thing so would have to see if he's like that off the pitch too.
Pretty rare top players make good managers.

Zidane can't get another job apart from Madrid which on the face of it is plain weird. Others flop as managing is completely different from playing.

I'm consistently amazed that people can't understand this simple context despite all the stats telling them that.

Cruyff and Beckenbauer would be two exceptions I suppose.

He could be one of those but we are talking about 2 out of hundreds of top players being a success.

But basing a players success as a manager on their personality and playing career is just plain bizarre.

I'm hoping somebody can explain to me why people do it.

Yep. On the whole it's "get Bully to coach the strikers" levels of thinking.

Was discussing with Kenny on the way to the ground on Saturday (he brought it up, honest) the latest bout of nonsense that Saunders had inflicted on the world - this time that Lewandowski couldn't be considered one of the world's best strikers because he doesn't play in the Premier League (where do you even start).

Now, Dean Saunders was actually a very, very good striker, much as it pains me to say that knowing what a cockknocker he is. Record British signing for a while and it wasn't like he was overpriced or anything, he was excellent. He was also demonstrably one of the worst managers in the entirety of British football over the last 30 years.

Yeah, it's unusual. I wouldn't say Messi for example would make a good manager, and I wouldn't have said Rooney would (not that he has).

I don't automatically think good player = good manager, I don't think anyone does.

It's his non footballing characteristics which I think would give him a good chance if they transfer. Utter dedication, intelligence etc plus his experience at having done almost everything in the game across lots of leagues.

I think he'd be far too intense. Roy Keane without the murdering vibes.

Keane could never understand why people weren't as good as he was, Cron would be the same. Plus why would he bother.

To me that's batshit mental reasoning.

Coaching/ managing are completely different skills to playing and we have no idea if he's any good at them.

I have hope for Xabi Alonso becoming a good manager but he's having a rough time of it at Sociedad B right now (albeit having just guided them to their highest ever level of competition).

Keane is either a psycho or a huge windup merchant, probably both.

He got respect through fear, which doesn't work these days.

I don't think I've referenced his playing skills other than the experiences he's had.

As I've said, things like drive, determination, leadership are all things I'd look for in a manager.

Definitely the former, I seriously don't think he likes anyone!

I think the appearance of his beard is linked to how pissed off he is too

It's those little smiles he does when he's laying into someone or criticising pogba when I wonder if he's playing up to his character.

I think its when he is thinking in his head about what he would like to do to them

Ranieri confirmed at Watford.

Doubt he'll last the season going on what he did at Fulham and the run they have coming up.

Maybe they've offered him a one month rolling contract

Tell you someone else who has a nasty run coming. Ole. United have a really unpleasant run to mid December and also the two Atalanta fixtures are going to be testing. They won’t bin him I don’t think, but their current false table position might be about to be addressed.
