The Live Match Discussion Thread: 2019/2020

There you go, I agree with much of the last 3 posts, personally I agree Brexit has had an effect on bringing the racists from under their stones but for me the biggest driver is social media, not sure what the answer to that is, is there a will to control it or is it just too big and untraceable to police?

Agreed with much of what Gary Neville said, leaders of I’d say 3 major parties have used racist policies, ignored anti semitism or been blatantly anglophobic which does nothing but encourage the horrid far right nationalists.
Fans are so desperate for their side not to lose, so some do completely stupid brain dead things and follow mob culture.
Not saying it’s an excuse as you should still have some control, self policing is difficult to as those shouting this vile abuse can be very intimidating to approach and are beyond reasoning in that moment.
We’ve all been at games and seen how angry some people get, it ain’t nice to be around at all.
But it’s the stupidest thing spurs fans doing that to Rudiger when they’ve got black players in their own side.
Simple lesson I’ve learnt is after a bad result don’t go on twitter, facebook or listen to sports based radio, watch a good film or s good comedy.

People aren't more bigoted now than ten years ago, they're just more likely to feel comfortable expressing it.

If anything, I think this little period that is exposing more deep-seated intolerance in western society will turn out to be a positive.

I'm not sure this is true over here. I thought there was a genuine feeling of acceptance in society that everybody was trying to get along and there was very little animosity in race apart from Islamophobia, mainly stemming from the Iraq war. I could of course be miles out as I am white so don't have that chance of prejudice everyday.

Our newspapers have gone to town on immigrants and anybody who isn't white for the last few years, encompassing Europeans who come here to claim benefits and giving oxygen to the likes of Hopkins and Yaxley-Lennon.

That oxygen has given people who were vulnerable a place to go rather than an education in how to be better to people. We're literally breeding hate in our media.

With regards to yesterdays racist abuse.
All over the media but i havent actually seen or heard any evidence of it so far. Heard a lot of "yids yids yids" at the time and Harry Kane was close so im sure he would have heard it too.
Last season at Chelsea/City with the Stirling incident, the fella said he called him a "Manc Cunt" and lip readers agreed although he still lost his job but got cleared of any offence.

He wasn't cleared, there was insufficient evidence. The difference between criminal and civil levels of guilt.

for me, the internet has given racists a platform. through twitter and facebook they now feel entitled to spout their....no other word for it...bollocks.
the election result showed this clearly, we have a prime minister now, who is a racist, a total liar and those with the same morals and nothing better to do with their time, simply batter the internet with their crap.
Great Britain is now racist, sad to say but i can't see it any other way, and more sad is the fact that i cannot, certainly for four years or more , see how the sensible, rational members of the UK can do anything about it.
the people of Great Britain will not realise what they have done for a year or two and that simply , may be too late.
we are not citizens of the world anymore we are racists bigots, judged by the election and nothing else.
and the epiphet "Great" is long gone.
this is so sad.

Wow thats a very depressing view, I hope you're wrong, I'm hopeful that we can get back on track to reducing racism in a few years time, its never too late surely? I still feel on the whole a big majority of people in this country are 'good' people, well intentioned and that will shine through eventually. Perhaps there is too much hope in my views, hope not.
One thing that did depress me recently was a discussion with my lad, I was of the opinion that racism among his generation (30 somethings) was a thing of the past, but he reckons not, that is worrying

Tbf there was probably a lot more institutional racism when it was "Great" Britain.

That these incidents seem so awful to us is at least one sign of progress.

It worries me, of course it does for my grankids sake, but i am very much a glass half full man at all times. I just think that racism has always been there, PC tried to do something about it, but the argument that Bernard Manning was just telling jokes (for example) sums up just how seriously this was taken at grass roots level. It is a notion(racism) that is built into so many people that really believe they have a right to crack a funny or take the piss out of someone of a different colour or religious belief. If you look how fast Europe as a whole is moving right and then farther right, it's there and there can be no real dispute about it.

What worries me most from a footie point of view, is if the Fa or FIFA have to make a decision , just what happens if my side are two nil up, the abuse starts and they walk off the pitch. Who wins the game?, my team or do we have a replay and when my team are two nil up again, off we go game abandoned again, we don't win they don't lose but the racist fans (or psuedo racist fans keep them from losing the points) and off we go again????

we have seen how FIFA and EUFA are dealing with racism, a club playing regular european footie (with the tv fees, match fees and all) gets a 20,000 fine and the crowd locked out for one game, or not actually as in our own experience this season.
it is sad but racism has never gone away since the second world war finished, it took a breather maybe, but it was always there and still is.
We all know Farage is a clueless twat, but by frightening the population that all the syrian refugees would end up in Britain if we stayed in the EU, look how much attention he got, and what happened next, and don't even ask me about Donald the wall builder.
If we cannot stop our own so called responsible politicians, we've go no chance at Millwall.

Harry Kane goal ruled offside by VAR.

Another armpit offside, said it before technology isn’t advanced enough to make such a tight call.

Agreed. Until they are using cameras with much higher frame rates per second the margin for error is just too large.

Does the VAR ref just make the call? Are they also the ones using the video technology to freeze frames and draw the lines or is that left to a computer wizz?

Don’t think it was just his armpit offside though, that was just the body part furthest forward. Offsides like that should be given because it was clear he was offside without the lines.

At what point do you freeze it at the time of contact with the ball or the time it leaves the foot? Offside was created to prevent a clear and obvious advantage to the attacking side.

‘triffic header as described by Hoddle.

I had exactly that discussion with Dan. We came to the conclusion that it is the moment that the foot makes contact with the ball, rather than the moment the pass leaves the foot.

Anyway, 1-0 to Brighton. End the game now please.

Spurs really are crap, so many 1/5 players or overated players in their.
