The January 2025 Transfer Thread

And technically not Indians! It’s a whole technicality ruckus over here.

For me, I probably think that what rankles so much about the physicality stereotypes is less about what is said than it is about what isn’t said.

Let’s be honest, most footballers, whatever their race or ethnicity, are going to be quick and strong, else they wouldn’t be playing top flight football. Now, maybe part of why I’m so sensitive to it is the way it parallels the experience of Black QBs in the NFL, but where the problem really lies for me (with the caveat that I’m White as hell and do not have the lived experience of racial prejudice) is how it precludes the mental side of the game so thoroughly.

To pull a recent example of a highly successful Black footballer, there can be no doubt that Sadio Mané was lightning quick and very strong for his size. But I have rarely heard those compliments consistently recognize his tactical understanding of what Liverpool (and Saints beforehand) needed him to successful at. He understood extremely well the tactical task, how to improvise within it, and how to connect it with the tactical understanding and improvisation of his squadmates. Too often, at least from an armchair, those mental traits are discarded in favor of the physical ones, and that does him (and other Black players like him) a huge disservice, IMO.

Aborigine technically just means an indigenous race of a certain country or land mass.

Native American Indians are technically aboriginal.

In context when talking about the Australian Steve Corica, we all know what ethnicity was meant by it though.

Anyway back on topic... Dave Edwards. Not quick or strong.
Doyle says hold my beer!

Clearly Doyle has other attributes to his game but strength, power and speed are not amongst them.

I love the way you have to go back 30 years for the first example that pops into your head.

Look, it's clearly not bullshit. It happens, there have been multiple studies confirming this. You not liking it, not understanding it, or not agreeing with it doesn't make it any less true. As I said, obviously there are many black players that you can describe as skillfull and intelligent - but it is a fact that physical attributes are talked about more often with black players than white players, often ahead of the other things that they bring to the table.

Saying Marco Guehi is quick and strong isn't racist. But race does contribute to the fact that Guehi will be described is quick and strong, whereas John Stones is classy and intelligent
John Stones is far from Quick or Strong
