The " Honey I'm home and I'm bloody starving , what's for dinner " Thread.

I don't buy beef/pork/turkey mince any more, but I can see why people aren't keen on Sainsbury's new packaging (on the right):

That is not going to be nice.

I'm all for reducing unnecessary packaging but it doesn't apply here - mince isn't something you would want to vacuum pack.

I gave it a go and it's shit. Really shit.

I've not made a Full English pie, but I have done a Full English curry and Full English in the hole...

Chicken Balti. Sag Aloo. Basmati. Rotis and Naans. The curry mixes here are pretty crap, although spice tailor look to have just arrived, so this is a make from scratch job. Going to be epic I hope.

Yep, Aussie stores don't really do decent curry ingredients, mixes or ready sauces.

Tried a green curry paste last week and before embellishment it was blander than John Major

Going to invest in a big new mortar and pestle and a mate here has told me of a fantastic Asian supermarket on the other side of the city for stocking the pantry properly.

Yeah, similarly there's a curry house near my daughter's. Their Madras is so bloody mild. I've had hotter Rogan Josh!!

The tastiest curry I've had there is at a South African cafe in the nearby Green Point shopping precinct.

Phil is right. All spicy food here is really anodyne and lacking heat. But the Indian food is better than the Chinese which is awful. The Vietnamese restaurant in the centre of town is supposed to be decent and there are Korean restaurants aplenty In Toowoomba for some reason.

Korean BBQ restaurants everywhere in Aus. Lots of Japanese ones too which were really good.

Rump of lamb on a bed of crushed Jersey Royals, ratatouille, and mint jus.

When I used to visit a foreign country, I'd always try the local/national dish at least once. I know it sounds like a bit of a cliche, but what food would I expect to be served? Surely its not Kangaroo steaks is it?

No it isn’t. Pies. In this part of Queensland a bug sandwich is pretty ace (this is not a bush tucker trial - Moreton Bay bugs are sort of like a mix between crayfish and lobster and the tails fried off in butter are epic). Plus VB chicken. Open can of VB stick the chicken cavity over it - put in on the barbie under the hood and VB evaporates into the chicken during cooking making it moist as fuck.

Depends on what type of restaurant you go into. The basic staple cuisine of Australia was pretty much based on British and European settlers. Like Paddy says meat pies are popular, roast meats, veggies, but so is schnitty (schnitzel). Oh and the Aussies generally love beetroot and pumpkin with everything...
