Back in the days of the troubles, didn't the IRA use certain codes to warn the authorities that they had planted a bomb. Though they usually only gave a couple of minutes notice. The speed at which the game was abandoned makes me wonder if a warning had been given.

They used to give quite a bit longer than that. Usually half-an-hour. Birmingham was a fuck up by the bombers, whoever they were which meant the warning was way short of what they used to specify.

If West Ham avoid defeat they go above United as do Southampton if they beat Palace, I think it's going to have to be played.

Could just not bother with the first half as it'll be 0-0

The bomb disposal unit are on their way to Old Trafford according to a Manchester Evening news reporter

They are there, the truck went past Ed Chamberlain and co at what should have been half time (they were stuck out presenting in the car park)

Controlled explosion carried out at Old Trafford

Man Utd say experts have concluded that the "device wasn't viable"

Do UK authorities attempt to identify such packages before detonating them?

Off topic but why would they put a bomb in place and then send a warning about it?

The idea is to cause disruption, rather than kill people.
Because they are 'conscientious' terrorists...

Something about trying to control the British authorities rather than actually kill the people caught in the middle, wasn't it?

If my memory serves me well the IRA believed their war was against the British army not civilians hence the warning, although different things conspired to fuck that up on many occasions.

The Reublican movement disliked anything and everything associated with England. And the only thing that led to so many civilian casualties was the bombs being planted in pubs, waste paper baskets and elsewhere. I am not sure that I understand what things conspired to the warnings not being received in time.

The device found at Old Trafford is described as "incredibly lifelike" but not "viable"

So, we either have a smart arse/thick fucker hoax to try and delay the kick off in some awful attempt to get Utd an advantage in knowing what M City had done whilst they were still playing or a genuine test run to see how easy it would be to get an explosive device into a Stadium during match day

I believe and indeed hope it is the thick fucker hoax option

Your point isn't a bad one but after some of the atrocities committed against the Irish I imagine there were many IRA members who didn't lose any sleep if a warning went unspoken.

City's result was irrelevant as far as gaining an advantage goes, United needed to win regardless.

Just been on bbc news that the man Utd bomb was a training device left over from a practice in mid week. Ffs.
