The Film Thread

I've not said that it was intentionally racist.

My view is, shall we say, more moderate than Singh's, but I still find her article interesting and worth reading.
I didn't state that you 'said' it was intentionally racist though. My comment was directed at the linked article.

My mistake, mate. Got a bit too defensive.

Megan Leavey. Great film for all animal lovers. Shows the special bond between dog and humans.

Watched 2 films this week...

Alien Covenant - wasn't as motivated to watch because of the horrendous reviews but I actually liked it. My only gripe is the aliens didn't look real in the way they did in Aliens but the story and pace of the film was satisfying. If you were out off I would still give it a go.

A Cure For Wellness - Another one with bad reviews but I think in many cases people are missing something pretty big here, the ending which I won't spoil hints at a far more sinister conclusion to what is on the face of it a basic Hollywood ending. A tad far fetched but I loved the suspense and use of sound (crutches in particular) I also liked the fact it can be interpreted in various ways. Another one I would give a bash if you aren't sure....its weird by the way realllly weird lol.

Watched Life today, the idea is not that original felt like a slightly different version of Alien. Bit flat throughout and no real character depth. Worth a watch maybe but I wouldn't get too excited.

Watched '6 Days', a dramatised version of the events of the Iranian Embassy siege of 1980.

Very watchable and I recommend it.

1980, nearly forty years ago ???

I remember we were watching a John Wayne film (True Grit I think) when the news coverage kicked in.

Makes you feel old doesn't it - any film cannot match the tension of watching it happen live

Trainspotting 2. I don't know what I was expecting from this but this certainly wasn't it. I suppose I was wrapped up in nostalgia, I remember watching the first one on some pre-release pirate version that my mate had got his hands on all those years ago and it was one of the best movie nights of my life. There were plenty of great one-off scenes throughout but as a whole it just didn't seem to work.

The flashbacks were a good touch (if not a little overused) but they also served to remind me that I'm now on the wrong side of forty and left me wondering where those twenty years had gone and how they'd gone so quickly.

Wasn't that exactly the point of the film? They did the right thing with it IMO - if they'd tried to outdo the original, it would have been a disaster. I really enjoyed it and was relieved it didn't sully the effects of the original - which really is one of the best films of the past few decades.

Agree with leeds. T2 was a really good and enjoyable experience. Loved the choose life bit.

Like I said, there were loads of great scenes I really enjoyed, but as a package it just didn't really work for me. It wasn't bad but it wasn't brilliant either.

I agree, why the little flashbacks?...Not due to today's lazy fuckers who can't or won't watch a 20 yr old film?

Get Out- interesting, kind of a horror with a witty social commentary. Worth an hour and a half of your time.

enjoyed that film. more funny than scary.

have you seen 'Don't breathe'. Nothing like the same, but I thought of it because 'Get out' would also work well as a title for it. you could say there's an underlying social commentary to it as well, but it's far less witty.
