The Film Thread

The Deer Hunter. Can't remember the exact year I watched this for the first time, but it stuck with me for years after and still find the one scene really disturbing, haunting, gruesome and just awful. Mike finds Nick, they enter a game of Russian Roulette, Mike starts talking of their trips together, Nick raises the gun in his drug marked arm and says ' one shot '. He pulls the trigger, shoots himself in the head and dies infront of his friend. In parts it's a beautiful film, in others it's stayed with me for being one that holds the most horrible scene.

On a more recent one, Castaway. The rain scene at the end. Just makes me sad.

The Deer Hunter is just a brilliant brilliant film

EDIT - I must just add Jaws. It came on mainstream tv in late 1981 for the first time (at least I think it was the first time) and we watched it just before going to Rhodes on holiday. My flip flops came off in the breakers and I refused to get in the water to get them. At 9 I was convinced that being in above your waist meant instant Alex Kintner.

I queued with my Dad to see Jaws when it came out in '76, not the best viewing for a ten year old, for the next week I wouldn't sleep in bed with my legs out straight :)

The Deer Hunter has always been in my top ten. When he goes back to the bar at the end is heartbreaking 😢

Arrival, was ok. Actually I really enjoyed it but wouldn't admit this to Mr P. I think he's in love with Amy Adams.

You know - Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is okay, I guess, but Cimino just hit absolute gold with the deer hunter. It would be in my top ten too I think, along with Goodfellas, the Godfather (I am going to have to have parts 1 and 2 together as one selection). Going to ponder the others, but I think the Omen might make it. Blade Runner is definitely in, as is Alien.

Has anyone bought an Android box very recently they could recommend? Mine has died, looking for a decent one but not Nvidia Shield level decent.

Ah thanks tredman. I'll take a look, was just reading a post on Reddit about that particular box :)

Watched 3 films on Netflix last week that were utterly raved about by critics:

45 Years - awful. Hitchcock used to ask of any script 'Where is the jeopardy?'. There is absolutely none here whatsoever.
Diary of a teenage girl - 7/10. Twas alright.
Son of Saul - 7/10. Gripping in the way that holocaust dramas always are almost bound to be but I never really bought into the main character's 'quest'.

Beware critics.

The book was excellent - they have the casting spot on for me.

Passengers. Apart from the two main characters being lovely to look at, not much else kept my attention.

Mrs Doubtfire has to be one of the funniest films I've ever seen. There are just so many funny lines and Robin Williams is brilliant.

My Berlin trip coincided with the Berlin International Film Festival and we managed to get tickets to one of the English films that were showing. Never been to a film festival before, all very exciting.

It had to be a completely random selection as it wasn't easy to get tickets. The film was God's Own Country, which was basically Brokeback Mountain set in Yorkshire with more genitalia. Really very gay. But hey, I'm a liberal leftie so I'm OK with such things. It turned out to be a very very good film. Beautifully shot and very strong performances.

Are you sure it was a 'film festival' ? Not just a gay porn theatre ? :)

Well, there are two festivals... the Berlinale (offical festival) and Belinanal (gay porn festival).... I suppose I could have got them mixed up, not being a native speaker. :gayrepost:

The Lego Batman Movie

Absolutely fucking awesome. It's hilarious - with as many jokes for the adults as there are for the kids. Non stop carnage, a really good plot for such a film and the actors voicing the characters are clearly having the time of their lives.

Loads of homages to old Batman movies and the 1960s TV show - it's 90 odd minutes of pure fun.

It's got more in common with the plot to Lego Dimensions as opposed to the last Lego Movie but if you liked either or anything Bat-related you'll love this.
