The Film Thread

Lion. Really feel for the little lad at the beginning when he is lost, but overall an uplifting & heart warming story that leaves your eyes moist. Definitely on my ' to watch again ' list. Excellent.
I managed the first 20 minutes or so.

Maybe ' bore off ' was a little harsh, but certainly wouldn't want to ever watch it again. The lad (nephew ) also got on me tits throughout.

It was slow going until it was revealed what caused his unmeasurable grief.

From then on I thought it was very powerful, Affleck did a great job of playing the role of an emotionless empty man devoid of feeling. I thought it was a very good film.

Watched a couple of films over the weekend:

Lion - loved it. Brilliant performances by Dev Patel and the kid who played his character as a 5 year old. Really emotional (I'm watching a lot of these kind of films at the moment!) with a strong score and awesome cinematography in places. Recommended. Agree with PPB's thoughts on this one.

A Monster Calls - a very dark fantasy film about a boy who is visited by a monster to help him overcome his grief over his terminally ill mother. A rather odd mix of fantasy, drama and 'coming of age' - sometimes it was hard to know what to make of it. High production values, a really strong ending but I thought it was a bit muddled in places. Possibly a bit TOO dark. Good overall though.

Superb film Lion, one of the films of the year. Very emotional.

Passengers

Loads of people have told me not to bother as it's shit, but I disagree. It was enjoyable - not just because it's got Jennifer Lawrence in it.

Her and Chris Pratt don't have the best on screen chemistry I've ever seen but again, people seem to have exaggerated this as well, I was led to believe it borders on Natalie Portman/Hayden Christiansen levels of shitness but not at all.

Decent enough story, tremendous effects, a nice moral dilemma thrown in for good measure - it's not really a science fiction film, it's more of a romantic drama that just so happens to be set on a spaceship. Maybe that's why some folks didn't rate it?

Worth a look - it's not groundbreaking or particularly original but I liked it and it's entertaining enough.

Actually sat and watched a film with the wife last night which is something we rarely have time for these days.

We just wanted to watch something light hearted so we watched Sing Street. It's made by the same guy that did Once, which I also liked, so I knew I'd probably enjoy it. I think the kids in it were unknown actors beforehand and they are all really good in it. It has Littlefinger from Game of Thrones in too and I thought he was doing a good Irish accent until I found out that the actor is actually Irish!

Just seen Pan's Labyrinth for the first time. Absolute work of genius. Brilliant.

It is fantastic. And brutal in the Spanish Civil War bits.

Saw Lion the other night- incredibly moving film. All the more touching seeing as it's based on a true story! Also, very good show from the young actor!

Good to see Fifty Shades Darker getting an absolute panning.

My favourite:

"If you want to watch a movie about a billionaire playboy with a penchant for darkness, inflicting violence and dressing up in masks, you're far better off seeing The Lego Batman Movie."

The kids are away for a week so managed to fit in a few films over the weekend.

Spotlight - pretty good. Not great cinema in terms of visuals or directing, all a bit flat, but a powerful story and good performances. As an ex-Catholic schoolboy, it's always good to see the Church getting a kicking.

Birdman - now this is great cinema in terms of visuals and cinematography. And excellent performances from everyone. Quite clever to have Michael Keaton playing a character trying to resurrect his serious acting career after playing a superhero! He's in Spotlight too and I think he's a very likeable actor.

It Follows - excellent little horror film harking back to classic 70s and 80s horror films like Halloween. A bit like Stranger Things with it's great electronic soundtrack and 80s film references, but with more sex. Basically "it" is a curse that follows you around until you pass it on to someone else by having sex with them. If "it" kills that person before they pass it on, it goes back to the previous person. So basically your punishment for having teenage sex is to have more sex. :)

I thought Spotlight was brilliant too. I like the grimy Boston look Hollywood often strives for so didn't see it as that flat. Ruffalo in particular was brilliant I thought.

I guess you'll be looking out for The Founder with Keaton?
