The Film Thread

Tried to watch La La Land. Managed about 2 minutes. Really not my kind of film - don't know why I thought it was a good idea to watch it!!

Has anyone seen The Babadook ? Directed by Jennifer Kent, it wasn't what I was expecting from a psychological horror, which is the type I prefer, but it's a clever and brilliant film for several different reasons that I can't go into without spoiling it for those who might want to see it.

Great performance by Essie Davis.

yep, liked that when I saw it. better than a lot in that sort of genre.

It's not all like the opening sequence tbf.

I guess it's like Deutsch going to Molineux and finding out the XI consists of 11 Matt Dohertys and is managed by Dean Saunders. Doesn't bode well for the 90 minutes.

Manchester By The Sea

The most powerful and emotional film I've seen in a very long time. Casey Affleck's performance is remarkable - I don't know how he does it, but he's basically playing a bloke who just happens to be bottling up a lot of grief without ever really letting it all out. Sounds pretty simplistic but the overall effect is so impressive. Having seen this and Andrew Garfield's brilliant performance in Hacksaw Ridge, if I had to choose which of these 2 was more deserving of the Oscar, I'd have to say Affleck.

Beautifully shot, the music adds to the emotion and tension and there are some really tender scenes mixed in as well.

It's a brilliant film.

If it doesn't involve sparky teenagers dressed in primary colours dancing on top of cars, how good can it be really?

I can only assume that PPB has no soul.

No, I don't actually. Not anymore.

Didn't you find it depressing? I found it depressing and Mr Penguin fell asleep through it.

Depressing is the wrong word - powerful and emotional are more apt. I don't know how you couldn't be moved by it.

I take that back, I do have a soul.

I am moved by many films, I cry at many films, therefore I can't be a totally unfeeling soul less bastard.

Hope T Dan enjoys MBTS as much as you did :)

Lion. Really feel for the little lad at the beginning when he is lost, but overall an uplifting & heart warming story that leaves your eyes moist. Definitely on my ' to watch again ' list. Excellent.
