The Film Thread

Haydon Christiansen is the reason I rate I above II and III.

The thing I HATE about the remasters is putting HAYDEN CHRISTIANSEN as the ghost of Anakin in Jedi at the end. Ruins the whole thing. Use the actor who you see when Luke takes Vader's mask off for fucks sake.

The Three Musketeers - Matthew McFadyen 2011 version

S'alright.

However, I get soooo pissed off at nonsense like this. Airships. Yes - I know it makes for some great bits of cinematography, but the Montgolfier brothers first made a hot air balloon work in 1782. The Dumas novel is in the reign of Louis XIII, who died in 1643. Obviously, the airships are way beyond any abilities of that time or even now, but it is fucking stupid.

THIS IN BUCKETS.

Why have a young Annakin, but an old Obi..?

Booked tickets for The Force Awakens the other day - IMax 3D, naturally.

So in readiness, The Machete Order started last night with Episode IV. One of my mates has never seen a Star Wars film before so it'll be interesting to see what he makes of it. He really enjoyed the first installment. Episode V followed by Episode II pencilled in for next Monday - shame it means the best Star Wars film is being followed by the worst!

Monday is here. Beers are chilling in the fridge, snacks on standby. It turns out - after some extensive Xbox Live action on Battlefront that my friend who hasn't seen Star Wars before genuinely doesn't know about the big reveal at the end of Empire Strikes Back. Quite how he's reached the age of 34 without knowing that is quite something, but it'll add something awesome to tonight's viewing!

My friends were AMAZED to learn not only had I not seen star wars, but I'd never seen any of the trilogy. So amazed, that they repeatedly forgot this fact.

Indeed, they were all also very jealous about the fact that I have seen all star wars films for the first time on a big screen.
Oh, and I too knew none of the reveals, at all.

So - V followed by II last night.

The contrast between the two is absolutely ridiculous! The acting, plot, chemistry etc in Episode II is shown up enormously juxtaposed with Episode V. There is so much wrong with it - I hadn't really how bad Ewan McGregor was in certain scenes (when he's talking to the Prime Minister on Kamino - dear god! Awful!) and Hayden Christiansen/Natalie Portman are consistently terrible.

The effects - especially Coruscant - are great, it all looks very pretty but having seen those two films back to back, puppet Yoda is much better than CGI Yoda, who loses so much in the performance. Can't really fathom why that is, but it seems like overkill to me.

Another thing I hadn't really noticed until last night was just how little actually happens in Episode II. Certainly considering how long it is.

The Obi Wan/Jango Fett fight was quite cool though.

III then VI next, and then we'll be ready for the new one in a few weeks!

Is there a good reason for watching them in that order? (I'm not a Star Wars fan so if it's obvious, I apologise...)

Yeah - this

Very geeky, and packed with spoilers (obviously) but if you don't particularly care about that, or if you're curious about the 'Machete Order', it's a good read. And I completely agree with the reasoning behind it.

Swap VI for III and that's correct.

Totally agree. None of the prequels come anywhere near the OT and though III is the best of them its still an absolute bucket of shit. Doesn't have 4% of the emotion of Jedi. The actual scene where he turns to the Dark Side is one of the worst things I've ever seen on film.

These reviews are quite funny and very accurate, if you can tolerate the lengthy running time. Really exposes the prequels for what they were - essentially very lazily made films created to sell toys. Ep 7 is bound to be better simply becuase it;s been made with some love and affection.

Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey with a dodgy American accent. Not sure about that.

Saw The good dinosaur yesterday with my nine year old - utter shite. There were a couple of little girls in front of us (around three years old) who cried through the whole thing. No jokes for parents as Pixar are normally brilliant at, and it was basically a confusing mess of death and not a lot really happening. And the Hindu short film at the start was just fucking weird for a kids night out.

This looks awesomely bad! I shall be watching.

I'm turning off the internet between Friday and Sunday.

Tonight is the gathering for the final installments of the Machete Order - Episode 3 then Episode 6. Then we shall be ready for Sunday.

Having never been capable of watching more than fifteen minutes of any Star Wars film, is this new franchise likely to improve the quality of script, plot and content.
