The F1 Thread

I wonder how many key moments will be missed as 'we go for a break'.

Hopefully Sky adopt the Spanish way. Couple of years ago I was in Madrid when the British Grand Prix was on and when they show a race over there and go to adverts the race stays on, allbeit in a small box in the corner of the ads, but you could still see the race.

$#@!ing hell. I can't afford to subscribe to sky $#@!ing sports and yet another nail in the coffin of free to air sport.

the spin on the BBC website is ridiculous - this is a cost cutting exercise by BBC

I also don't give a $#@! about things being in HD. Whoop-di-$#@!ing-doo. My telly isn't HD. I don't care. I want the programme available free to air, not prettied up and costing me.

Nothing is free to air though is it? You still pay to watch BBC etc.

Its a shit deal for fans of the sport who are now going to have miss races unless they can fork out another wedge every month and Sky Sports ain't a cheap add on.

There's no doubt Sky Sports revolutionised sports coverage and i would imagine they will probably do something like that, speaking for myself i'm probably one of Sky's perfect customers, i have had Sky for about 20 yrs and have always had the full package which is currently running at £62:25 per month.

Just said on Sky there will be no adverts during the races

I'm even more perfect - I pay nearly twice as much as that although they are about to reduce it by £10 per month by not charing for my second HD pack. People drink coffee out of me.

The real problem with SKY is that if you like certain things (like Sport and Movies) they are way out in front of the competition. The number of movies they have is quite vast and their sports coverage is exceptional. I have no doubt that their F1 coverage will be of the same quality and with their dedicated sports channels there will be even more coverage over race weekend.

Suggest you ring up and ask for the cancellations dept. Tell them you're moving to Virgin as they are cheaper. Sky then magically find you a deal where you pay half as much. I do it every year.

Bad, bad decision by FOM and Bernie. TV coverage has seen the explosion of interest in F1 globally, and hiking it off to Sky is simply going to cause the viewing figures to plummet. It's not like football where people can get to games locally - it's not exactly the work of a moment going to Spa, let alone Singapore.

I don't know whether I want to go back to early 1980s levels of coverage, and I'll probably not bother at all. And I can reel off F1 stats like Deutsch can reel off Wolves ones.

I am not Sky subscriber and was about to ask that it surely won't be long until £100.00 per month becomes the norm. Obviously I am out of touch as this has answered that.

You are absolutely right, the coverage of sport (when I see it elsewhere as I don't subscribe) is exceptional but it is a vicious circle (although very well executed since day one by Murdoch). -
Gamble on the rebranding and marketing of football - get the customer base and slowly but surely raise prices, giving the ability to outbid anyone and everyone for rights to everything, giving more customers, more funds to throw at coverage and the consequent ability to raise prices again and start all over again.

I suppose we should have seen it coming 20 years ago but would it have changed anything I doubt it?

The BBC are screwed, they know they can't compete and it is just a profoundly sad slow and inexorable exit from free to air sports. Personally - my belief is that sport is so integral to UK culture it should be retained as much as possible but the BBC has a set budget and hundreds of competing demands.

Livid. Ecclestone can fuck right off. Keeping it on free to air my arse.

This whole thing stinks. The BBC know that under the current Concorde Agreement, that Sky can't purchase the viewing rights for the whole season, so it would seem the BBC have negotiated with Sky in order to negate the rules set by the current agreement. Bernie doesn't give two hoots because he's still getting his money and it's being partly aired on free to air.

The production team didn't even know abuot this until this morning, and Brundle/Humphreys don't exactly seem too happy about it, and I seriously doubt the teams are either.

Well they are soon to be part timers unless Sky take them on full time

SSN keep running stuff about this and bring on twats that were on ITVF1 and will no doubt end up on the Sky coverage to chortle about it.

Thank you Sky. Thank you BBC. You have just taken away half the races from a sport I like to watch. Absolutely boiling about this.

No fear, by March you will be in a full time job earning ££ so you will have new HD TV and Sky Sports and you will sit there on Sunday with a cigar in one hand and large brandy in the other.

We live in hope! The thing that really got my goat was SSN introducing the drivers with graphics as if it was the transfer clockwatch.

WE DONT NEED TO BE TOLD WHO THEY ARE YOU ARSEHOLES. WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING THEM FOR FREE FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS.

Calm down calm down.

Sky will be going OTT as they know they have a new audience to try and bring in.

Unfortunately half the old audience will be denied their opportunity to watch. Really poor show. I am very disappointed in Ecclestone over this. Not overly shocked, but definitely disappointed.

Yeah, but I won't.

Bollocks, I'll just play Project Gotham and pretend I'm Seb Vettel.

Worst racing game ever!

Yeah, you weren't that quick but you went sideways a lot so you get enough kudos to somehow 'win' the 'race'. Bullshit.

The races are just races, at least on the version I've got.

I don't and never have played online. Could be different on there.
