The F1 Thread

It's nonsense like this, from a a commentator I usually really like, which shows how bad its got:
#AskCrofty I love Melbourne it's a great place to come, but often we don't get a lot of overtaking and as a result, not the best race to start the season https://t.co/K736ueSOYR

Millions of people should put up with a terribly boring race because it's a 'great place to come'. Utter tosh.
The cars are the issue. Melbourne has been the home of plenty of good races before.

We'll quickly end up with a calendar of boring Tilke-dromes with these cars. It is impossible for cars to run behind each other without ruining the tyres or putting too much strain on the engine, which is in turn affected by the daft new rules on the number of engines you can use throughout the season. It was farcical to see Hamilton backing off to save his car.

I thought all the new graphics looked rubbish as well. Like some crap they've lifted off the official video game.

Yes, very disappointed with those. They've improved year on year until now. The in-race numbers are almost indecipherable without a mega-screen. Can't see them lasting the season. Mind you, I can't see me lasting the season either if it's all as devoid of excitement as this. They've had, what, twenty years to make overtaking possible? Might as well watch Scalextric most of the time.

At least with Ross Braun in charge of the technical changes nowadays, he knows better than anyone what the issue is and will hopefully try and do something to help it.

That's what I thought when he was appointed, but hasn't he overseen the three-engines rule change?

That's also been backed by the teams to help reduce costs. It's the aero that desperately needs sorting, not the engines.

I like the new graphics tbh, they give a lot more info than the old ones. Agree that the font is a bit shit though.

As for the cars, aren’t the regs pretty much set until 2021 or is that just the engines?

When does terrestrial TV lose all of the live rights? Has it gone for this season?

Think this year some of the races are on channel 4 but from next year it’s only the British GP which has to be terrestrial thanks to Bernie signing a long term deal with sky.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the engines, but the restrictions on use will mean we'll see plenty of instances like Sunday's over the course of the season. It's essentially a season long endurance event now.

Channel 4 has Bahrain live, and then the run of three races up to Silverstone (Austria is the one before, but I can't remember the first of that little run)

Plus there will be highlights of all qualys and race on terrestrial, which, tbh, is about all I really want. I certainly wouldn't pay for Sky coverage and I usually record anyway, so as to fast forward the boredom. http://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/42816877

Yeah the engine and other regs will change in 2021. Liberty are meeting with the teams this week to tell them what the regs will be.

Brawn has said Australia was boring. Only 5 overtakes in the entire race! His group will be working to get the cars fighting wheel to wheel more with the new regs in 2021.

Which is all a long way off.

Do they have to redesign tracks then to make more overtaking possible..but not fair the fastest car straight forward wins, balance is key to mercedes for me..maybe alternative ways which you can choose to pass somebody at different times of the race..like in rallycross.. massive work on classical courses that wont happen i guess..watched a lot of indy series before and like it a lot too..mixed city courses and oval ones

There will still be some good races this season, Melbourne is one of the worst for overtaking after Monaco. Abu Dhabi is always boring too but there were plenty of good races last season imo

$150m budget cap from 2021 is the rumour. The only thing that guarantees is mass unemployment.

Not a chance the big teams will sign up for that.

Yeah, anything they try and do to even the playing field will result in Ferrari and Merc threatening to leave so they can’t do it. Hopefully they manage to agree to something that improves it as a spectacle
