The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (2019 version) - 1970 - present

People who don't like Muscat only do so in a revisionist pompous way or were in the extreme minority at the time. Until Grimsby he was pretty universally loved down here.

Very much so, but his thuggery cost us a promotion in the great choke, so it is pretty easy to be somewhat less than chuffed with him!

Aye.

I couldn't say I endorsed what he did at times or gloried in it (some of our fans definitely did do that, by the way) but he was our player and a bloody good one.

Plus while it clearly doesn't help to go a man down and it's especially irritating when it's for something totally needless, we didn't lose that game just because of that. We lost that, and all the other ones at the back end of that season, because DJ had run out of ideas yet totally refused to freshen things up. Basic tactics that were easy to work out and knackered players running on empty while perfectly decent replacements sat around on the bench or in the stands.

Certainly never loved him, nothing pompous about it, he was a thug on the pitch then, still is today.

He's in his mid 40's I'd imagine he'd struggle to get there today.

I saw his tackle in the A-League when I was over there a few years ago. Melbourne Victory I think he was playing for. Absolute assault.

Because I fear I wont be able to fit him in anywhere unless I play him RWB, and he must be in.

Hibbitt
Doherty
Irwin

Doherty (never in a million years did I think this would happen)
Muscat
Kightly (think he actually would have done well in that role, whereas Foley wouldn't particularly and Wolves version of Jackie Mac wouldn't either)

Jamie Smith was probably closer than Foley for me on this one. Which is a shame, I bloody loved Kevin Foley.

Assuming that we will be allowed 6 for the cetre midfield 3 as we were for the back line then there are possibilities to put KH in a more natural position

Doherty
Irwin
Kightly - like DW think he could have played that role. Might be some doubt as to his defensive capability, but realistically most of us have had those doubts about Doherty & it looks as if he will be a shoe in for this (to think a couple of years ago most of us would have paid him to go).

This is a tough call, and I'll need to give it some thought.
He won't be in my top 3 for RWB, but I wonder if Bazeley in his prime would've fitted in the RWB role we play? He worked well with muscat, and was quick. always remember kennedy giving muscat the runaround one season (for man city). Bazeley swapped places with muscat, dunno if that was a managers call or players, but kennedy was never in the game after that. bazeley completely nullified his threat.

That's twice, one more mention of Michael K and Lemonjelly will appear like Beetlejuice :)

And just like magic..........

There's no doubt that in Australia and to a lesser degree Scotland he became a parody of himself.

Yes he would and we did play him at RWB for a while in 1999/2000 (which meant leaving Andy Sinton out when he was playing better than he had since his England days...)

I think he just decided to live up to the reputation, I actually saw Keith Curle do worse (only out of view) a few times but he never got as much of a bad rep ?

Curle must have been an absolute bastard to play against. But he was more Martin Keown, whereas Muscat was nearer Michael Brown or Joey Barton. There is a difference.

But as Tony says it's a view that has grown in retrospect. He was never unpopular here except maybe in the immediate aftermath of Grimsby (not even his last game for us). And some of that may have been purely because it meant we had to play Gunnar Halle.

Hibbitt

Completely get your point with hibbitt. When I was tiny, he was the first wolves player I knew. Some nostalgia is probably gonna make me want to include him. TBF, Hibbitt could play pretty much anywhere!

Doherty

Froggatt - my memory of his time is hazy but I remember him being a WB but can't remember which side. Think he'd have done well in our current formation.

Foley - toss up between him and Ricketts, Foley gets the od for his age and engine.

In "that" FA cup semi final, I wanted curle to stick one on viera early doors, especially something not seen by the ref. Hoping viera would react and get sent off. Curle was superb for us!

Nah, you canny have Froggy on the right. Totally left sided.

Save him for the next pick (he'll be very much in my reckoning) and I'll take Samuel as your #3...

Doc
Bazely
Muscat

Bazely was very talented and had pace to burn. I liked Jamie Smith but can't say he was anything special.
