For me, looking at it objectively, Hick maybe could have been brought in when Smith was given his debut. But you aren't getting a regular spot ahead of Gower, Gatting, Lamb. You just aren't.

Gower captain. Gatting and Lamb dropped at various points as we did after 2 poor games back then. Botham injured for most of the Summer replaced by Pringle batting at 6 which went as you'd expect

The key word in my line was REGULAR spot. We used to try a load of shit for one test and then revert.

No apologies, Lamb was and then came back. Gatting took over the captaincy from Gower for the NZ series. Moxon also had a go at opening. Guess that's why they eventually turned to Broad for the Ashes
