Still a good chance to qualify for the champions trophy then! Something to play for, although beating convict CC should be incentive enough.

Everyone's been taking flak (fair enough) but that's now three times (Afg, Ind and Aus) where we've bowled first and restricted them to a target that we should reasonably get. But we got nowhere near the first two times and you can't say we'll turn it around today.

If Root doesn't want to retire from this format then the decision should be taken out of his hands

Same old story once the opposition gets over 200 it’s game over.

Only turned it on as we started batting, Buttler again opting to bat second considering we’ve been next to hopeless chasing.

Angelo Matthews timed out against Bangladesh!

The Bangladesh players appealed that he wasn't there and ready in the 2 minutes allowed and the umpires had to give it!

Was it Matthew’s who waved through the mankad on Buttler in 2014?

By the book it’s the right call but seems a bit of a shithouse appeal

He's a Mancad lover so if he wants the laws to be adhered to, fuck him, he's earned it

He took his stance and so was ready and then the helmet strap broke. Disgraceful appeal.

At work so obviously not watching so can't comment on the circumstances of this, but I can comment on HIS previous

I'm not watching it but that is what I have read. The umpires should allow for any safety equipment to be replaced regardless of whether or not it was a spinner bowling.

He can face 1 ball then the timing out is not relevant

He doesn’t technically have to wear the helmet in the World Cup though. If it was say a county game where the helmet is compulsory to face any ball even from a spinner then he would have a cast iron case not to be timed out. Here, rather more murky.

I really don’t like the appeal though. Poor spirit.

Bangladesh winning I think puts us out of the Champions Trophy running. We're now going to need to win both games which you can't see (you'd be brave to bet on us winning one).

It's been mooted that we'll play a Test series vs the West Indies instead which sounds great until you realise how abject our record there is! The 2004 series win is our only one in 50+ years. The 2009-2022 series over there have contained some objectively awful cricket too, not fun to watch, whether we're on top or not.

As an aside, Mushfiqur Rahim's longevity is a great key to cricket connections down the timeline.

Mushfiqur Rahim has played against Graham Thorpe
Graham Thorpe played against Allan Border
Allan Border played against Geoffrey Boycott

Takes you back to 1964 in three steps. Boycott may well have played against players who were immediately post-war, but it's out of my frame of reference.

If we count team-mates as well as opponents, then Boycott played with Brian Close who debuted in 1949.

Should still be OK with a comfortable win against Netherlands and a narrow defeat against Pakistan as long as NZ take care of SL, assuming NRR is the breaker rather than H2H. If not then the same scenario but the Aussies giving Bangladesh a pasting

If you could find them in the same game you could go from Hobbs in 1905, overlapping Washbrook 33/34 who takes you to Boycott in 64 - who I watched playing for Yorkshire in Middlesbrough in 1986. 3 players spanning 81 years in the same competition!! Not sure you can get them in the exact fixtures though ☹️

Tangent to Wolves but you can have:

Doherty (2023 and counting, sadly) -> Ikeme (2003, in a matchday squad at least) -> Ince (1986, for West Ham)

Three players over 37 years
