The Cricket Thread

Will the ECB pull the plug on a competition that they’ve invested a lot into?

Honestly don't think it makes that much difference. It's superfluous and the lack of any identity to the teams will always hold it back but it isn't why we're shit here.

It was a stupid idea but it's a sideshow that you can ignore if you want. Even the scheduling argument is overblown, what happened this summer isn't likely to happen again.

This is the thing with hindsight, you can look on this thread but I doubt a month ago you've got people criticising the selection of Wood, Woakes or Curran.

Returned figures of 76.2-2-538-7 between them so far. They're your first choice players.

Moeen was always a gut feel pick, not based on anything he's done any time lately (and accordingly has 0 wickets and 26 runs to show). Livingstone is the ultimate mostly miss, occasionally hit ODI player. Willey is just shit and has been for years.

I think that's fair. Curran isn't a particular shock, he's best form for England has been as a death T20 bowler and Woakes has always been a home pick only player with the odd good game away. Wood is the surprise, but when teams have already got off to a good start they can afford to throw the bat and at pace it's going to go the boundary.

The one thing which was predictable was the lack of balance of the side without a genuine all rounder and the length of the tail, although that's ultimately not what cost us

You can't afford Mo AND Livingstone to be rubbish with the bat
You can't afford Woakes AND Curran to be complete drains

Bairstow and Buttler have been diabolical too.

Any side is going to struggle when a third of the proven performers have a complete shocker. Same would have applied in 2019, there are only so many changes you can make and you end up chasing your own tail.

It'll be a reset for the ODI team - wouldn't be surprised if Malan, Bairstow, Stokes, Mo, Willey, Woakes and Wood never played one again after this tournament - but we have three games in December in the Caribbean then none until September 2024. So it'll be a while to see what shape it takes.

Finally a thriller between Pakistan and SA, and SA limp over the line.

Need NZ to step up against Aus tomorrow or I suspect that's the top four sorted miles before the group ends (of course we are not making it but I'd like to see a good tournament regardless, Euro 2000 wasn't sullied by England being dirt).

Regardless I think it’s just a procession to India winning it

It's all set up for them to absolutely bottle it in the final. That would be spectacular viewing!
It's shaping up that India will play Australia in the semis, I think they are the one team I'd support the Aussies against

Availability and marketing of this World Cup has been shocking I think it’s only the regular fan who knows the ins and outs. Again sticking the games behind a pay wall won’t bring new audiences. Not Sky fault but compare it to the rugby World Cup every game was available to watch.

Bowled well nevertheless I think anything over 200 and England will struggle.

India batting in these conditions is very hard to beat it’s why having them 4 down is a very good effort from England so far.

Good catch to get rid of Rohit but another horrible outfield, hope Livingstone is ok.
