There's probably been loads but I can't remember a test match where both teams have gone into the last session of day 5 with a chance of winning, especially as both teams got well over 500 in their first innings.
Dunno how many we'll win going forward but doubt many of them will be boring.
There have been a few. One we lost at Adelaide or Brisbane I think where declared on 550 odd, and they got 650 first innings and they won on the last day.
NZ throwing away all their wickets yesterday and some appalling tactics after tea today helped us out massively.
But what an effort and the hitting was just off the scale. I had us down to win at best one game this summer so we're already up on the deal with hopefully some good players to come back.
I love the technique, tactics, tension of Test cricket.
But possibly more than anything else - in what other sport does a guy get to eat a cheese and ham toastie in the middle of a crucial session then win the game with an all-time great performance?
Couldn't watch any of it today, but clearly a stunning performance. It has the feeling of the first days of Bayliss in the OD game when technically Farbrace was in charge ironically also against NZ. Not sure it's sustainable in this format, but the attitude is welcome and commendable
We were very successful under Flower where we had talent but our best way forward was to be relatively attritional. You just can't do that with these players.
We had 1 win in 17, we now have 2 in 2 and against a good team too (albeit twice we've benefited from them losing a bowler part way through the game). I think we have to go with it for now, what we were doing before wasn't working anyway.
Special mention for Alex Lees. He won't get any headlines from this game but looks like an opener at last. After the Hameed, Jennings and Roys of this world [and there are others escaping lightly here], he's starting to look the part.
