The Cricket Thread

You can't go into a test thinking that we'll run through them in both innings and bowl only 130 odd overs.

You have question marks over the fitness of Wood and Robinson and whilst Broad (touch wood) seems to be injury free, Anderson is prone to pick up niggles. It was interesting that whilst Stokes was complimentary of Woakes after the game he said something along the lines of "We'll be able to trust him if he's required for the next test"

I think that both Bairstow and Mo will play.

Foakes batting for Surrey as I type.

I think the only change will be Anderson for Robinson. Mores the pity...

Not helped by Robinson being injured.

All seam can be fine if we’re producing a green top and there’s weather about. Plus Root can obviously bowl a bit and it’s not like Moeen is a world class spinner.

Personally I’m not seeing a massive deal of difference in what I’d expect Bairstow or Moeen to deliver with the bat, so if I want a spinner then Moeen plays and Bairstow doesn’t.
How many more wickets than 200 does he need to become world class? Obviously he’s not Swan or Warne but his record is pretty good. Currently his batting is on a par with Bairstow and his bowling is better than Bairstow’s keeping.

If I'm picking a team for Old Trafford:

Crawley
Duckett
Hain
Root
Brook
Stokes
Foakes
Dawson
Woakes
Wood
Broad

But there is a 0% chance of that happening so no point getting upset when it doesn't.

Foakes out for 46 against the might of the Nottinghamshire attack who had two bowlers go off injured.

We're very unlikely to produce a green top against these. I generally always want that change of tempo too, then you look at Head getting out 3 times to spin in the series, it's not a move that I ever feel goes well. Root is also not really a proper bowler, he's a Graeme Hick level part timer.
Headingley was pretty green. Plenty of movement off the seam. Another game we got the best conditions in, fortunately we keep winning the toss.

Wasn’t Head the number one ranked batsmen against spin before the series or have I made that up?

I agree Root isn’t the answer really, but that’s why I’d be playing Ali instead of Bairstow.

Nice of the Aussies to allow us to have 14 in the team for the next test.

Englands next wicket keeper batsman? - 19 year old James Rew is the leading run scorer in the county championship this season and has just scored his fifth century of 2023 for Somerset.

If you think the England men's team catching leaves something to be desired you should see the women's. You wouldn't accept this down the beach.

Stadium about 10% full for West Indies vs India. Very sad to see. Stick a fork in them.

Yep I’d love it if the West Indies got back to even 50% of their 80’s hay day but it simply won’t happen, football, basketball, baseball have far more importance in the Caribbean unfortunately plus mis management of West Indies cricket.

Tried their best to throw the game away. Fine knock by the skipper and 19 not out by Kate Cross at 9 to see the side home.

Seems to be common to both the men’s and women’s teams that it’s now OK for tailenders to give their wickets away with wild yahoos when a competent bat is down the other end and well set. Knight nearly ran out of partners today. It’s not for me. Still, great we won!

Middlesex tied their fixture with Northants in division one of the county championship.
