The CHRISTMAS Thread

Accepting that the holiday is written in genocide (nor celebrated in the UK at all AFAIK), nonetheless, I find Thanksgiving to be an excellent moment to reflect on life and the things that are going well.

Happy Thanksgiving, all. Find your people, tell them you love them and appreciate them. Opportunities to do so are anything but infinite.

(As I alluded to yesterday, Thanksgiving kind of marks the “real” beginning of the Christmas season here, hence me posting this in this particular thread).

Obviously it's not a thing over here and never really checked out why but what exactly are you giving thanks for?

Well, we do get your Black Friday now (our Black Friday used to be the Friday before Christmas Day).
In fact we've had it every day for the last fortnight or so...

Oh I've heard of it. It is an abomination on the same level as pineapple on pizza.
Salt on chips, yes please. Salt on sweet things? Fuck no, obviously.
It's a flavour enhancer. That's all.
Much like putting anchovies into meat stews and casseroles. Doesn't taste of fish at all, just enriches the flavours.

Thanksgiving is worth it just so the Detroit Lions get their (usually) one opportunity a year to play on (national) TV.

As has been pointed out, the actual context is, frankly, a crime against humanity. “Wow we’re so thankful for all the resources in America… Shame about all those Natives, though”.

These days its just an excuse to spend time with family and reflect on the blessings we’ve been given/earned over the last year. And in the role I think it is quite a nice tradition. Can never be severed from the history but we can try to make it a positive day going forward.

Enjoy your day Alan.

[Wish you had kept the Turkey over there though]

Totally fine with anchovies as a base, done that loads of times.
Salt on chocolate/caramel makes it taste salty, which is not really what I'm after.

Same as we use Christmas then.

interesting that all your national holidays are secular.

mrs jelly just got back from northfield. she had to pop there to visit her bank as it's the closest, and she thought she'd use the time to pick up a few things or get ideas for christmas.
As she got off the bus, there was a bloke stood there with a carrier bag. He asked mrs jelly if she wanted to buy any perfume. She declined politely, and his response was "it's allright stuff love, I've only just nicked it!"

Whammed out after 7 hours this morning after FiveLive played it on the Christmas Bauble World Cup quiz.

Is there nowhere safe?

Oh yes. A perennial favourite.
