With car tax for EVs going up in April and my car tax renewal being in April, thought I’d try and tax my car early and see if I could get away with it for another year…

Seems to have allowed me to do it at £0. Whether they’ll end up chasing me at some point I don’t know, but hopefully I’ve beat the system!

Also noticed loads of cars with so much dirt on their number plates making them unreadable. Am sure that's illegal?

Everyone's been doing it, you're fine. I taxed mine in March last year instead of June so I'd get a reminder through the post and wouldn't forget.

Also told my mate with an EV to do the same.

Yeah but thought because it doesn’t actually expire until April, and i didn’t plan further enough ahead to do it last March like you did. However didn’t realise you could tax it that early.

Technically you lose the months you have left by taxing it early, but since EVs are currently £0 then you're not losing anything.

Looks like the quadricycle is where it’s at with the Morroco assembly plant’s Fiat Topolino version of the Ami already sold out for the year apparently.

Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s the boom segment and there are already retro kits available for those into that sort of thing:
