The Car Thread

Norway continuing to lead the way on EVs.

Probably having to do with being one of the European countries with the most houses, compared to living in apartments and adding to that, one of the most wealthy nations.

The regulator borked on the front passenger door window the other week. Got it replaced and fitted for £350. Fortunately the motor didn't need replacing.

Any other pitfalls when looking for a new starter motor? I've found a new one that matches my transmission, BHP, and engine code.

That should be good enough. The other is to check your reg no with the supplier. That should tell you which part number you need. Have you gone through an official spares supplier?

I’m assuming that’s a second hand one from a breakers as with Halfords/Euro Car Parts etc you just give them the reg no. and you’re sure of getting the right one, but it does sound as though you’ve covered it tbf.

Edit: what Leeds said a moment ago.

Been a few years since I changed one but they used to be a piece of cake to fit, accessible, normally 3 bolts (the one at the back was often a bit awkward) then plug and play with the electrics.

Funnily enough there is quite a bit on YT recently about SM’s and how with so much packed into modern engine bays they are on certain motors becoming quite a big job. Mat Armstrong replaced one on his RR Cullinan recently and it’s an engine out job! Imagine the cost of that, and for a part that can easily fail. I think it’s a massive job on some Audi’s and no doubt on a few other marques too.

I think the first one I did on a Ford Escort cost me about a tenner from the local scrappy for the part and about 20 minutes to fit. Big noise on forums and YT about parts being coded now too, causing a whole load more grief. Progress I think they call it.

I don't have the tools or space to fit it myself. Current plan is to find a suitable one that I can spread the cost out, then find somewhere that will fit it for me. Cheers both 👍

What car you talking mate?

Corsa.
It seems like I'll need to get under the engine to do it.
Seems straight forward, but take a look at these if unsure to get some idea of cost, these on the expensive side, so should be able get it done a fair bit cheaper.

Cheers for that; what they quote is already £50 cheaper than my usual garage...

I've used them in the past and came to me, turned up on time to do a wheel bearing on Transit.

Took a bit longer than he expected but stuck to original quote, decent experience. But once I'd gave them my email I recieved adverts every few weeks from them.

The first one I did was on a Moggy Minor. Nipped down to the scrappy's and took it off a car there and swapped it back at home. Probably cost me a quid.

Did a Montego once, after carrying a lump of wood in the boot for weeks to hit the sticky solenoid.
I used to put mine in gear then rock it backwards and forwards. Was reminiscing last week in the pub about nipping down the scrappy to pop a windscreen out to replace mine. (My mate had just spent 175 excess)

Must’ve driven a few miles over the years with a broom handle in the back ready to reach down to the bottom of the engine to give the stick solenoid a good whack when needed.

Was always struggling with cheap cars when younger and quite enjoyed the weekend trip to the scrappy to pick up a radiator, starter motor or whatever had packed up that week.

Had a Mk3 Cortina that I look paid £125 for, sky blue with red wings. An absolute dog but I loved it. The gear lever came off in my hand going over the original river Cam bridge once. I clamped a set of mole grips on the little stub that was left and drove it like that for about 2 years, even went through a mot like that.

Madness but all felt like fun back then.

Had a cavalier and left Mrs and keys in whilst popped in a shop, whilst in queue she appeared and had locked the keys in, i tried to pop glass out the hatchback for some reason and shattered it. Ended up buying a complete tailgate from scrappy.

Accelerator peddle was knackered and had to put my toes behind the anchor point to stretch the cable, great fun at the time.

I bought a different Mk3 Cortina for £50 once, lime Green this time! Had it for less than a week and vividly remember driving carefully through a recently resurfaced road with loose chipping, 10mph limit, and some loon in a builder van came racing towards me. Sure enough, bang, shattered screen. £63 to repair. 42 years on still wince about that.
