The Car Thread

Have you looked at second hand EV prices 🤣
There’s loads of information and scare stories about secondhand vehicles, particularly EV’s. It’s easy to provide ‘evidence’ to support your narrative from all sides, which is the current way of the world I guess.

Any way, I’ll let others be the Guinea pigs in the meanwhile.

This guy has clearly got a beef with EV’s, however:

Not really sure what you’re saying and I won’t be watching a YouTube video from someone like that.

My point is that second EV prices have crashed. There are some fantastic bargains out there.

I've been keeping an eye on EV second hand prices and you're right they have come down significantly. My big concern is how long before you need a new battery, I'm assuming that's whats dragging the cost down.

Ok apologies, I didn’t read that right at all.

Don’t blame you for not watching that either tbh, lots of stuff like that from all sides best avoided.

Most get a very long battery warranty. 8 or 10 years.

The used EV price crash has caused a lot of concern here at work.
Actively trying to get people using our Sal Sac scheme to extend their current EV for a year rather than order a new vehicle

Even looking at adding used EV's to the scheme to drag more value out of them

Think when I spoke to someone at BMW they said theirs was 100,000 miles, which would've been more like 4 years for me. 😢
You can look at it like a second hand car though - most don’t have warranties and just because the battery is out of warranty it doesn’t mean it needs replacing.

For the older EVs, like the Leaf or S, there’s a pretty thriving market for refurbished batteries. It’s a fair amount to spend but the car is almost like new.

I agree in principle but I think where it's still a bit riskier than your ICE 2nd hand car is that you haven't got decades of historical data to build up an idea of maintenance costs. I'm sure as years go by that picture will develop and you'll get brands standing out with a reputation of their long term reliability/value as you have with ICE cars now and that'll factor in to their 2nd hand prices. It's just a bit of an unknown at the moment as comparatively there aren't that many used EVs about and they aren't as old/worn as some of their ICE counterparts.

From my perspective it was more of a concern as I'd end up on a longer term of finance that the warranty was likely to last so I could be exposed to some very expensive work before I'd even bought the thing. It's become a bit moot now anyway though as my employer has also tweaked the cash alternative as part of the new company car policy so would get slightly more cash and be allowed up to 7 years old now, winner, but limited to 125,000 miles on the clock so no way I'd get anywhere near that age.

Biggest annoyance for me with cars these days is pissing touch screens! Everyone is filling their boots on removing as many buttons and switches as possible chasing that efficient design of as few controls as practicable to save money.
I just did a check today. With my previously mentioned difficulty with ACCURATELY touching the right button at arms length in a rapidly moving car.
I tried to hit an on screen button, missed it and got the adjacent one. Had to hit the 'Back' button then try again.
Failed hitting 2 buttons at once, the car chose the wrong one, press 'Back', then got the right one at the 3rd attempt.
Time elapsed was 13 seconds.
At 70 mph that's 102 feet per second Which is 442 yards, at 70 mph, without looking at the road!
So like a good boy, I tried using Voice control and was told "You can't set Air Conditioning settings with Voice".
Presumably that's because there are these clever sliders which activate as your finger approaches. But they're not illuminated!
Which is all a bit shit really.

Well, chaos on our street today just so I can get ready to have an EV charger installed.

Story goes

1) Can't have a charger put in as our house shares electric supply with our neighbour. Whack a charger on to that and it will cause them issues. So we need unlooping
2) National Grid do this for free
3) National Grid paid us a visit but couldn't unloop as the previous owner built a porch over the point they need access to.
4) They instead have had to return to unloop from the neighbours side
5) To do that, they have to dig up the road, put a new supply to their house (they currently get electric from the cable that goes into our house first)
6) then dig up their garden to cut off the loop

Maximum chaos that now has zero effect on my day or house and fuck the neighbour...well fuck the landlord of the neighbour. Have been ignoring us since there was a problem with the shared chimney stack that in the end I have to fork out over £2k to sort out or risk further damage to my house.

After this though, I need to have my electric meter moved from inside the house to outside and then I have to get an EV charger installed

Easier to build a petrol pump on your drive 😁

Ah it will piss off the street and since most of it are Daily Mail reading we don't like strangers around these parts this a local street for local people nobbers then bring it on

Why would you need to move your meter from inside to outside?

Why would you need to move your meter from inside to outside?
Because the point of entry should anything happen to our electric supply is now under the porch. To get access they would need to dig up the floor in the toilet.
National Grid have requested we move it to avoid any issues, mainly due to the age of the cabling. Chances of something happening that requires the above are slim but got to follow the above now they have documented their concerns.

Yeah, ESSENTIAL works you fuckers

How else you going get those charging points?

Shouldn't building the deck over the entrypoint have been some sort of code violation?

Although, I guess even if it was, they're probably not tracking down the guy who used to live there.

Cowboy builders I'm guessing, long gone.
Dunno why Kenny doesn't just get a long lead and plug it in in his kitchen, lead out through the window.
