The Burnley 'Got of jail' Verdict thread

I’m not sure it’s “demonstrably false”.

Aside from the Chelsea game last year, MGW has done nothing in a top level game other than look hopelessly out of place.

There is no way, currently, he is a Premier League player......he is literally light years away.

His local-boy status gets him games because we all want him to do well.

Truth is, he’s absolutely nowhere near good enough.

I’m no MGW fan, but I doubt Nuno gives a shit where he’s from when he puts his name on the team sheet.

How does our wanting a local boy to do well force Nuno's hand into picking him?

He's had more than one good game in a Wolves shirt -- Arsenal away springs to mind but there have been others.

He is among world-class footballers, who all rate him highly. He's not a MOTM at this stage and I would have hoped for his development to come on a little quicker over the last eight months but to write him off is a bit silly at this stage, iMO.

He didn’t start “Arsenal away” he came on when the game was stretched and hit the bar when he should have scored.

I’d be happy to be corrected if anyone could name me 3 times he’s played well when he’s started (and not in Mickey Mouse games).

And he’s not playing with “world class” players either......that’ll be Phil Foden.....same age.....stratosphere’s apart in terms of ability.

Listen, he might have potential, but - let’s face it - he has continually looked diabolical at the top level.

It is, but pales into insignificance compared to the hyperbolic horsecrap in the post above yours
Agree.

Morgan had a poor game yesterday; indeed, he's not been great for some time. Diabolical, though, absolutely not, and to be honest I think he's perhaps been miscast by Nuno in playing that deeper role a la Dendoncker.

I am with you about 80% Alan. What does frustrate me is when he gets fancy flicks instead of the simple ball. I get he has some skills but fast, move the ball create space and accurate passing are better than a fancy flicks that ends the move.

He hardly missed a two yard tap in!
He was 20yds out on an angle and smashed the underside of the bar with a shot that beat a keeper who was having a worldie for them but don't let the truth get in the way of you slagging off a young Wolves player...

He had not looked 'diabolical' ever, he is what he is, a young talented player who hasn't quite moved on as quickly as we'd all hoped, Nuno obviously thinks he has enough, same as he thought Traore could be turned into a decent rwb. We will see over the rest of the season whether he can step up. As for his flicks and tricks, I'm convinced Nuno has told him to carry with them and not to worry about losing the ball, if Nuno was irritated by them, he'd have put a stop to it. The club obviously want to nurture the young talent we have rather than spunk money on some average 'established players', I'm happy to support that, yes I'll criticise poor performances but I'll not call for players being chucked on the scrap heap based on one or two performances

Reading some very strange stuff here so far.

MGW had a poor day yesterday. He is young. He needs to learn. For the avoidance of doubt I wouldn't have been picking him yesterday. We needed Dendoncker in from the start.

Read what I wrote - I’m not slagging him off, just saying that I’ve never seen him play well when he’s started a top class game.

Happy to be corrected.

I’m not so sure he’d get the same sort of sympathy for being continually below-par if he wasn’t born and bred in Wolverhampton.

Agree on that (was there in person) - it was a shot that deserved a goal & an inch or so lower would have got it. Not an easy chance either

So you still think he missed a sitter at Arsenal?
Riiiight

It would have been an incredible goal. What utter nonsense to suggest he should have scored it

He was key in us turning around our form, especially in starts against Chelsea and Bournemouth

I think MGW and Nuno are struggling with where to play and what his role actually is. For the majority of the first half yesterday he seemed to drift out to the right hand side and he just didn't get what to do. I actually think he may be better in a deeper central role as he seems to be much better with the game in front of him rather than in advanced areas with his back to goal where he seems to think the flicks and tricks are needed. Against Pyunik his goal came from him in a back to goal situation where he tried a fancy flick that didn't come off as usual but he then ended up deeper with the ball coming back to him which allowed him to play a forward pass and drive in to the box. I could be completely wrong but he's definitely struggling to progress at the minute and i think not knowing his position isn't helping.

I have to concede your first point; I thought he came on a lot sooner than the 85th minute. Harsh, though, to say he should have scored when he was inches from a sublime finish.

The fact is he's only started six games for us, and his substitute appearances have not always seen him utilized in his natural position. He may be trying a bit too hard with the individual skills as a result of the lack of continuity. He hasn't really stamped a claim on a starting berth yet but utilized correctly I don't see why he can't be an asset to us this season.

A lot is being made, mainly in the media though other voices elsewhere, as to how much the Europa journey is affecting us - not sure that is entirely true as otherwise we would not have been able to keep going to the end (which was later than it should have been due to Burnley's time wasting as soon as they scored).

Do think that we got it slightly wrong in team makeup & tactics & not quite on the money with passing/decisions. We know how Barnes & Wood will play & what Burnley will do to play to their strengths - we didn't (particularly first half) did not deal with that & we should have.

Doc is not right for whatever reason - Traore should have been on either from the start of a lot earlier than he was (when he did come on they had to put 2 on him & resort to pushing him to the ground when they couldn't get the ball - certainly forced them back) & it needed a more physical presnce in midfield. If Saiss is not fit (as has been suggested) then Dendoncker was needed from the off.

Would also like to see Neto with a bit more time than the 25 mins or so he got yesterday - was full of running and a fair bit of skill

Should have scored? Jesus wept. He turns and bends a shot over the despairing Leno from about 22 yards that dips and was whipped and hits the bar. An inch lower and it is a goal of the season contender. Should have scored is absolute fucking nonsense I am afraid.

I also agree with the stuff from Slink about finding a position. And until Nuno resolves that conundrum, MGW is going to realistically have a bit part role.

Saiss definitely wasn't fit, like Kenny i was in the stadium early and he was doing some running with the fitness coach and his right hamstring was pretty heavily taped up which suggests that it was just a bit tight and not worth risking. Not sure we can go in to games with out either him or Dendoncker in midfield.

Roger Johnson backing off v Man City

Jamie O Hara v the scum

Leon Clarke

They fit diabolical.

MGW is streets ahead of those even if he has lots to learn
