The Blame Game

Doesn't see it until it goes past last defender. Innocent. Walks free from court

Watch his body as the shot is taken...his weight is pushed down 1 side ready for the shot across him, the deflection $#@!s him over. You are too busy looking at where he is AFTER the deflection. If Maddison's shot is going where it actually ends up then he deserves to be questioned on it but it doesn't as he is going across Patricio not down his left side. Any keeper will know it is hard to suddenly shift body weight from one side to the other and then to do that and react to a deflection even harder. I would doubt any of the above keepers would have saved that. If he doesn't set him self up for the shot he is expecting, he wouldn't have saved that one if it didn't get deflected. He has around 0.5 seconds to see the deflection, react and then move his body weight to enable him to properly dive to his left. Never going to happen.

Some of the saves on this clip are about as difficult as it should have been for a world class keeper to stop Maddisons effort. Dont get me wrong I am not blaming him per se for the goal, I just think that 7/10 a keeper of his calibre should save it. And on this clip there arent any keepers of Patricios pedigree IMO.

The one thing all of those clips have in common (bar the Hope Solo save) is the ball is within the 'keepers reach. By that I mean the ball is going in roughly the same area as where the keeper started, albeit they all have to change direction at the last moment. All the shots are more or less in the keepers eyeline to start with which you could argue Patricio's isn't. The deflection on Patricio's save puts the ball out of his reach, with more power than the Solo save and doesn't start in his eyeline.

Pretty harsh on Patricio. I agree with Kenny on this one.

Cool. Good debate. Lets see how he progresses throughout the season. We need him to be on top of his game. Lets hope for a solid defensive display against city. If they carve us apart and score wondergoals well I will stand back and admire. There is nothing you can do about those. If Doherty heads another pearler "Mr Angry" will appear pretty quickly on here lol!

Think some of them probably/possibly would've saved it. Courtois has got a ridiculous reach so if he matches Patricio for reactions he's probably getting something on the ball at least, De Gea again potentially edges Patricio on reach and is very light on his feet too so might even be quicker off the mark to get back across the goal, Lloris certainly has the reactions to make a go of it but probably the smallest of those mentioned so maybe doesn't reach the ball even if he reacts in time.

I was going to go with Courtois due to his height but couldn't be arsed to check the height of De Gea etc so just went with all. So the blame game on this one is Patricio's genes and not growing enough. I blame Mrs Patricio for not feeding him enough greens when he was a kid.

People think Rui should have saved that?

Looking from that angle it's an even luckier goal than I thought initially.

If you're going to keep a league table surely each goal should total a point. If two players contribute to it should they should score 0.5 points each? Or you could go further and break down the point based on percentage contribution. For example Bennett may have played a role in there second Everton goal but it was pretty minor by comparison with others.

Stills don't show if his weight had moved to his right and then had to change direction. My I ritual thoughts were how the hell did he not save that, then you saw the deflection and sort of accepted it. I have not really seen the goal back however I think he should have done better it was not a a massive deflection

“I have no idea what happened but what I think happened is this and therefore...”

What a waste of internet

Goalkeepers union for me too. No way Patricio gets blame for that. I bet he was still pissed off at not getting there though, which hopefully spurs him on for tomorrow where he is going to be somewhat busy,

Some of those keeper saves on that video arent world class, particularly some of the mls ones, mainly as the pace of the shot isn't significant enough. I know I can be a bore with my keeper union stuff at times, yet! Most of the video is just examples of the importance of footwork and maintaining your neutral stance. Meaning a change of direction is possible.

What I have seen of RP I like so far, I was mainly worried about his angles and positioning, thought he was superb in the world cup and he was fairly unlucky with the first Everton goal as if you watch again he gets out off his line very quickly and tries to block off the angle.

That is probably his strongest area. Certainly in the World Cup and it was great to watch him warm up v Villarreal doing a drill where he works on being quick off his line and getting his angles correct. My concern during the World Cup was his lack of dominating his area as he seemed to leave every ball crossed in. That looks like it was a team order though, as he has been fine in the few games so far

Fair enough 're the goalkeepers union. I was a left sided goalkeeper. I know I never played at any where near That level! That was my natural preference. I think Rui is a righty. His preference is to cover right. Watch .
His first movement is right 7/10.

Not that it matters. I have been watching that maddison goal. Over and over from any angle I can find. Now I think To blame him is harsh. But to say he can't do better is also not fair. I think he could have got there on another day so chalk this one up as unlucky.

.

It wasn't his preference it was the direction Madison's shot was going. He moved to the body shape and the shot, he didn't guess/hope it would go that way

This kind of nonsense makes me laugh. Fair play Cyber it's very funny.

Watch how he spreads himself in these clips. Whether coming out at a players feet from the left it right side his spread is right sided. Nothing wrong with that at all . Everyone has a natural stance.

A bit off for me to cough to being left sided and a South paw boxer given my stance 're left hander batsmen lol

The clips don't matter in this instance. If you are right handed your natural movement is that way and left blah blah nothing you can do about that really. On this one though, it makes no difference as he was setting himself for a shot that would have gone to his right.

Cyber talking absolute fucking bollocks should probably be confined to the cricket thread. Fucking hell.
