The Advice Thread

Thanks guys. I have my one month review on Friday so that is when I think I'm going to bring it up. I need to talk to the academy manager at orient before that though I think.

I'm in a bit of a weird situation right now as I worked on Saturday for an open day and the school is closed tomorrow (the staff have day off because they worked the Saturday) but when I messaged my boss about it yesterday asking what I should do he just said 'I'll let you know tomorrow' which I am yet to hear about..

Yeah, make sure you get everything sorted at Orient before you mention it to your current boss.

I had similar feelings when I was leaving my first full time job, pretty sure it was spoke about on here, I felt a sense of loyalty to them as they'd given me my first opportunity after University and my line manager had just had a shitty couple of months with decisions made by those above him pissing off his entire department leading to most looking elsewhere. Ultimately the way things had changed that job was no longer the right one for me so I looked elsewhere and thankfully found something more suitable, where I still am now, but the hardest part was still walking into the office next door and telling my manager that I was going, think it was actually the only real conversation we had in the time I worked there and went a lot better than I expected!

In the end you've just got to do what's best for yourself, get something more suitable lined up before you bring it up where you are now and then you've not got to worry so much how it goes when you know there's something else to go to.

Absolutely go for the Orient job. Don't stay in a job that is making you unhappy, even if you have just started.

Obviously make sure you've 100% got the new one before telling them you're leaving. And don't be afraid of how it looks. If academy football is something you've always wanted then tell them that it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Also tell them your job was making you unhappy, and why, and that made it an easier decision for you. Don't be afraid to let them know that!

I think that is what I am worried about is having that conversation with people and it becoming awkward or sour. Especially as one of my line managers' son I coach and he is really enjoying that. They will probably be a lot more understanding than I am giving them credit for.

I'm guessing as you're still in your probationary period then you have to serve very little notice? And by the sounds of it you work rather independently of your manager anyway so even if he did take it badly it's not like you have to suffer him being an arse to any great extent.

Harsh, but fair. I've worried in the past what X would think about me leaving. Chances are you'll pretty much never see them again, so do what's best for you.

I can serve a week's notice (which they could do to me too) and yeah you are right Mark I do work very independently of him. I don't get a day off tomorrow properly either so that's another reason for me to not be happy to be honest. Working for different football club's community sections I know they aren't very flexible but I want to be able to feel like they actually care about their employees.

To be honest I think my mate who already works there and got my foot in the door is going to be the most annoyed (But I can handle that - he'll get over it)

Been pretty much offered the Orient role. My line manager at West Ham keeps putting our one month review back so I thibk he senses something is up... but meeting him this Friday anyway.

Cheers guys! And thanks to those who gave their thoughts on my issue!

How did it all work out mate? Don’t often leave the footy threads these days so hadn’t seen this til now - hope it all went smoothly!

I’ve taken the Orient role so I’m leading their U13s, which I’m really enjoying. I’ve got an assistant coach as well that im enjoying working with too.

In terms of West Ham they asked me to stay on a few weeks longer while they look for someone to take my position so I’m going up into the 22nd of November. That way I managed to leave on good terms too. Any longer though and it would have got in the way of the work with Orient though. They were pretty good about it!

Thanks for asking!

Good compromise. Well done and good luck in the future. If you need a goalkeeping coach.......... No there are better out there!

One for the people managers on here:

I have an employee who called me at 8am on Fri to say he couldnt come to work as he had fallen off his bike in traffic and banged his head and twisted his ankle. As he wasnt wearing a helmet I advised him to check into a hospital nearby and keep me updated. I also told him to make sure he gets a note from whoever saw him, clearing him for work.

I texted him at midday on Fri and he advised he was still waiting to be seen. I called him during the afternoon for another update but he didn't pick up.
I didnt hear from him again on Fri. I texted him on Sun to see if he was fit for work today and he advised he was and feeling much better.

When he arrived at work today he did not have any note and advised me that he waited 5hrs in the hospital and then left without being seen.

For me, there are 2 red flags in the story:
1. When he called me at 8am on Fri, he said he was stood on Dorset st in the city centre, which would have been busy at that time, but it sounded as if he was indoors. There was no traffic sounds or anything.
2. We were in the office bar on Thurs night and I saw him at another table with one of the girls from the Croatian team, on a date I guess. I did check to see if she was in work on Fri and she was, but that was another red flag.

Overall, I don't believe his story. He's come into work today with a fooking band aid stuck to the back of his head, I couldn't help but laugh when I saw it, it looks ridiculous. But I cant say I don't believe him and I cant prove anything. I asked HR who said he only needs a note if he is off for 3 or more days. I really want to have it out with him as I feel I cant trust him anymore but I need to know how without ending up in HR myself.

Jokingly whack the back of his head and see if

a) He yelps in pain or b) Does fuck all

If B) call him out
If A) Hope you don't knock him out or put him in a coma or anything that risks the end of his life after a bad fall.

Fine line between the 2 I know

(Basically not a lot you can do but if the gimp was making it up he will do stuff like that again and trip himself up. Just mark his card and keep an eye on him)

Yeah, not sure on Irish employment law but you can self-certify for seven days here (in fact a GP won't give you a note any more, barring obvious long-term conditions, until you've gone past that mark).

It's clearly utter bollocks but well, you just don't trust him now. Down the line that'll be enough of a penalty as he'll get passed over for stuff, his work will be under more scrutiny because he's pissed you off, etc etc.
