The Advice Thread

For once I'm not asking for advice, but giving it. If anyone is considering taking Apple Cider Vinegar ( diluted with warm water or whatever fucking bollocks it tells you) for health benefits, DON'T TAKE IT. You might just get a severe allergic reaction that closes up your throat and airways. Awful day.
Err, if that's a result of me posting the batshit menu from the Australian Chef, sorry!

:icon_lol: :icon_lol: Not a result of the menu, but a result of me husband reading about something that he believed would do him good. Anyway, they are releasing him from hospital today, he can talk again, his throat has stopped closing up, inside mouth and gums have stopped swelling, the fucking rash from head to foot has gone, and he can breathe again and the bottles of fucking apple cider vinegar are down the toilet.

He wanted me to try it too. I didn't, as I believe my daily pint of Ale has far more health benefits....and keeps me regular. Go every morning at 6, only problem, I don't get up until 7 :)

Apple cider is probably just as good, and healthier, better tasting and counts towards your 5 a day,win win all round

I agree. On a different note, Apple Cider, you've just reminded me of the ice lollies I used to have back in the 70s and 80s :)

Does anyone know what train tickets cover use of Thameslink services? Think I might be able to streamline my journey to site tomorrow by using it to get to Croydon and then hopping on the tram rather than using the underground to London Bridge and National Rail out of there.

Service on Thameslink is still appalling. You'd be taking a risk that your train would be cancelled.

Been offered a promotion today which would normally be really happy news as I was working towards this in my own time.

However it's a bit tainted as my current boss has resigned due to stress after 5 months. Had a sit down with her today and she says she just got fed up of the constant ad hoc requests that were unrealistic and zero support from senior management. When I told her they had offered me her role she advised me not to take it as I wouldnt enjoy work anymore.

I would be managing 3 training teams in Dublin, Krakow and Lisbon. And today they also asked me to go to Lisbon for 3 months to help set up another new office as we are expanding out there. I can't go as Im on holiday in October.

So the discussion in my house is do I take the promotion, new level and pay rise that comes with it etc but at the cost of increased stress, working late, taking work home frequently, getting beaten up in meetings and having to manage 12 people across 3 sites via Video calls?

I'd always choose happiness over money. I'll have a life where I can try to enjoy each day as best I can rather than one where my pals can afford to stick me in a more expensive coffin.

I've had jobs (fairly well paying ones too) that were nothing but misery and it's an awful way to exist.

100% with Dan. Happiness over cash everytime. I've told my boss in the last couple of weeks I'll be stepping down from my role as I can't cope with doing it anymore and my health and family life are more important than cash at the end of the month

i don't disagree with Deutsch or Trips, though you also have to weigh up what not taking the promotion will mean - ie whether things carry on for you as they were or whether it will change how the senior management view you as well as you having a new boss who will probably know you had been offered his/her role. As you were thinking of taking the role at some point anyway you could highlight any pre-conditions you'd need to properly consider it, dealing with the most negative aspects that caused your current boss to leave.

While largely in the happiness over money camp, different people get different things out of jobs. You might be someone that thrives on that style of work, you might do it better than your boss and make a good fist of it. You might wonder what all the fuss was about.

DDW - whilst I would agree with others re the happiness over money camp, there is no way of knowing whether you will cope better with the issues than your predecessor.

Clearly she has had difficulties with the role & you will not (understandably) get a balanced view from her - at least go & talk to the relevant people appointing then make your own mind up as to whether this gives you a 'positive' or 'negative' feel

Thanks for all the advice guys.

After considering all points of view for the last 2 days, I have decided to accept the role and give it a shot.

Chances are I will be terrible at it, but if I don't give it a go I will never know, and as was mentioned here, I may regret not taking the opportunity when it was presented to me.

Wish me luck!

Good call, I reckon. You're young - if it's a wrong turn, it's not the end of the world.

Best of luck with it.

Good news Rob and congratulations, I’m sure you’ll smash it!

Good luck with it, buddy - I think you've done the right thing.

Beat of luck squire. You'll do a grand job
