Summer 2022 Transfer Window

That guy playing for Seville tonight, Rafa Mir, wasn't he one of ours a while ago?
How's he doing?
is he any good?

He was ours. Asked him to stay last year after a successful loan spell, he didn't want to do so. So got some decent money for him.
Doing OK for Sevilla, decent goal return last season

I guess the gamble is taking a chance the ball will be played into a certain area. Think of Raul against Bournemouth where he stayed towards the back post rather than take a chance the ball would be played to the near post. The gamble is that if the ball isn’t played there the player is then out of that phase of the game. The better the players understand each other the less it’s a gamble as they should have a better idea of where the ball will be pla

What are they gambling?

Such a pointless, stupid phrase for the football illiterate*

*This isn't aimed at any poster in particular, just a pet peeve of mine.
I can get that, it's a phrase over used, I know (by football illiterates like Alan Shearer and other ex pros ) but I think we all know what it means though.
Raul's been hiding behind defenders much like William José did.
Sad to say but unless he wants to get involved we are better off without him.

It doesn't mean anything as I said in my response.

Why Raul is hanging around the far post may well be tactical, it may well be fear. Whatever it is it isn't 'gambling'

The Raul debate and the Neto one are very similar. Neither play in the way they used to. Neither take the risks, take on a man, play with the aggression or cavalier spirit they used to. The injuries may be hampering their performances or perhaps something/someone else is?

That's a loaded comment, but I really don't know

Neto is trying too hard to make things happen.
I felt he was more of a threat on the left as well.
Raul just seems to have lost the hunger or drive and perhaps that's understandable after what he's been through?

I don't buy that. If it's hunger he doesn't play again, it might be psychological or it might be tactical.

It’s all to safe nobody wants to lose the ball, we weren’t quite as safe last time out but we weren’t exactly brave. Collective football version of dartitous. I’m sure with better coaching we could work out some patterns to open up defences but I won’t hold my breath.

Probably a bit of both. And the two go hand in hand.
What does he want though? An early ball? No - he's not playing on the defenders shoulder.
A ball to the far post? No - doesn't want to challenge to head the ball (understandably).
Ball to the near post? No - doesn't get in front of defenders.
Ball to feet? Maybe but doesn't link play particularly well and what after that? Doesn't really do 1-2's.
His strengths were in a two up front with Jota with an early ball on the break and also his aerial threat from crosses.
I can't see how he can work with the system change now. Compounded by his injury and time out of the team.
I'm not blaming him but can't see a benefit in playing him tbh.

As I said previously I really don't know, but it's difficult to make a run across the box when you know the wide forwards have been told to not cross it, check back and work something inside. On the odd occasion they do, there was one against Bournemouth, he looks a dick. He's not the player he was, that much is clear, equally we don't play the way we did when he was

Yep.

Neto has reverted back to what he did when he first arrived. Head down, not looking when people are free. Has to beat more than one player, then when he does look up he's surrounded by and can't make a decent pass. Or he'll beat someone and shoot too often instead of finding a better pass.

Yep. Neto is very average at the moment. Needs a manager like Nuno to motivate him to be fair.

Think playing him on the left helps him massively by simplifying his game.

He’s Not succeeding cutting inside, he’s more of a smash it guy than a bend it in the far corner. So he’s resorting to going down the outside on his right foot.

Get him going down the outside on his left and he will have more joy. Might even open up to come inside onto his right / work a one two to shoot with his left, or just cut inside and drive into the box and smash a cross-shot towards far corner with his left.

Guedes, Podence and Neto all prefer the left which is a problem.

If raul's issue was psychological, he also wouldn't be taking the front post when we defend corners, which he still does, & he's still making headed clearances too.
Given this, I believe his back post movement is tactical direction.
Raul has struggled under lage because like dendonker we don't play to his strengths. Nuno did in abundance.
