Summer 2022 Transfer Window

Yes, that will be penniless Everton who had to bodge the Premier League's COVID financial rules in order to get away with spectacular failing of FFP.

You do have to wonder with them sometimes.
They probably wanted him on loan without an option! MGW that is.

The more positions that are needed to be covered, the higher the chance of an injury or suspension. We've seen when Raul got his long term injury how hampered we were.

Anyway, I'm not dying on a hill over this, it doesn't really matter.

You've picked a position where we have no cover you scamp.

Or to put it another way - we currently have three first team full backs to cover two positions.

You'll find very few people who think we should sign another one or we should have kept Marçal just in case.
we do seem a little vulnerable in the full back position though. Jonny with two ACLs, RAN seems to be giving goals away too. i've read rumours we're after Grimaldo but no idea how true that is.

We aren't going to buy another full back.

I've heard quite a few Grimaldo rumours but can't see it unless one of the current fbs are leaving.
A lot of people have already written off Jonny after a few average games but imo we will struggle to get better options at fb than what we already have.

Who's written off Jonny?

He hasn't been great in the first 2 games, but haven't seen much writing him off

So just to check, we need to always have:

2 x GK (or is it 3?)
4 x FB
5 x CH
5 x CM
5 x AM/WF
3 x ST

And they all need to be players you would be perfectly happy picking out of free choice, in the Premier League, where we want to finish top half minimum. All 24-25 of them. Plus kids that are either on loan or playing for the U21s.

If you think that is ever going to happen then I have some magic beans that may also interest you.

As a bare minimum!

I would say a 1st team squad of 20 players is about right, with U21s as emergency cover.

2 x GK
3 x FB
4 x CB
4 x CM
4 x AM
2 x CF

+ 1 where you think most necessary. I'd probably want an extra forward player for greater attacking options and variety of skill sets.

Yep, agreed, and i'm saying we keep the emergency cover for the midfield.
But then how does he develop at all?

Will be very rare we have 3 of them unavailable. We've had no Moutinho last couple of games and Cundle got 0 minutes. Lage isn't going to play him so what's the point?

Like i said....

Cup games, the 5 subs rule, if we are actually winning games he can get minutes that way.

He'd be the emergency cover.

There's no guarantee that he'd develop any better on loan somewhere either.

It's not so much that.

Just it's pointless keeping young players here to never play (Lage quite obviously doesn't want to use him) and entirely pointless spending money on senior players who you will never ever want to pick (see Benteke a few weeks ago). And good players will not come here to never play.

You simply can't have a squad where absolutely every area is fully covered for every eventuality.
It's a luxury we can't afford at present, of course, but isn't it something we should be aiming to do? City and, at one time, Chelsea could probably each have put out a couple of different teams of good players capable of winning the league. Teams playing in Europe arguably need that sort of strength in depth, and if that's what we're (hopefully) going to be doing before too long, it might not hurt to do a little forward planning, at least. I still don't know how we got through 2019/20 with the size squad we had. I'm probably expecting too much, too soon, though. Marquee signings'll do that to ya.

He doesn't get minutes that way.

If at any one point we had two of Neves, Moutinho, Nunes and Dendoncker unavailable at the same time then we'd just play the two who are available. Luke Cundle still wouldn't play.

If three or all four of them were unavailable at the same time then we'd be fucked wouldn't we, like any other club outside the top six.

We'd be less fucked if we still had Cundle.

After Cundle who would be the next option?

Eventually. Though even City have fudged LB for years now. Not even as in relying on slightly iffy back up, they haven't had a proper one for a long time. It's been Cancelo who is a RB by trade, Zinchenko who is a midfielder who wants to play in midfield (gone now), ditto Delph, Aké who is a centre half who happens to be left footed, Mendy who was in jail and rubbish anyway. Then they wouldn't pay for Cucurella. Don't know what the new lad Gomez is like.

No-one ever has that depth, there's always a compromise somewhere, and the lower down the food chain you are the greater the compromises are and the bigger the gaps are, and the more you're crossing your fingers and hope it works out ok. I can live with that.

If of course we get to 2nd September and we still have one striker then I'll not be happy.

Bit OTT from me, probably on other sites than this one but many fans have Semedo and RAN as first choice which surprises me.
