Summer 2022 Transfer Window

I'd assumed Ronan would have been moved on by now, either on loan or permanently, so a bit surprising to see Cundle go out before him. Not sure I'd be happy sitting around as fifth-choice CM at his age, he needs to be playing regularly at a level he's more suited to.
no doubt that going out on loan is the best choice for Cundle, Ronan becomes out defacto 5th choice midfielder. That said though, i wouldn't be in anyway surprised to see Ronan out the door permanently this window

I think it's taken as read that Ronan can go, he hasn't played for us since 2017. He won't if no one bids though.

Portuguese clubs and other clubs being involved is a royal pain. Benfica signing the lad from Braga (to replace Ramos), all agreed and I thought the hold up was because the replacement Braga want was difficult to secure but its because Malaga own 67% of his sale value and Braga now not happy with that so trying to get them to lower their %. Horta taking the matter to FIFA as well.
Horta is set to play his 2nd game since his emotional goodbye 2 weeks ago
Horta wouldn't be to replace Ramos, he plays mostly as an offensive mc, rather than a striker as Ramos.

Otherwise, all true. Multiple clubs, including Portuguese ones, is a recipe for disaster

Cundle & similar prospects going on loan and getting 1st team football when ready aiding their development a la gibbs white is surely good practice.

433 with 4 midfielders doesn't seem like a fantastic idea if that's the way we're going 🤔

Out of interest, how many centre midfielders would you have in the squad (likely not getting minutes outside of the 4 already here)

That's the thing, i wouldn't necessarily want a finished article midfielder as 5th choice as that seems pointless, Cundle would seem to be an obvious option but that said Cundle needs minutes to develop which he won't get in our first team and he needs a higher standard than u21 football. Someone like a mosquera type in midfield would be ideal, needs polishing but could probably do a job if we really, really needed him too

Cundle was 4th choice last season, and started 1 league game. But now its a big ask only having 4 CMs and need a 5th?
We are playing with 3 rather than (the largely) 2 CMs for a start, and we were fortunate that none of that trio got injured for any significant period of time. Also i feel that if Cundle was a better and/or more experienced player he may have played more when Moutinho was tiring to offer us something different, instead we persisted with tired players.

I don't really understand the desire to keep our squad as threadbare as possible, particularly when those fringe players will/can get more minutes due to the changes in the substitutes rules and also hopefully we'll do better in the cups than last season too.

Absolutely no issues with Cundle going out on loan. He's at an age where he needs regular football and he won't get that here, as it stands. Also no problem in re-calling him, should we have a crises in that position and suddenly find ourselves without all of Nunes, Neves, Moutinho & Donk.

It's not so much that (in response to EP).

Just it's pointless keeping young players here to never play (Lage quite obviously doesn't want to use him) and entirely pointless spending money on senior players who you will never ever want to pick (see Benteke a few weeks ago). And good players will not come here to never play.

You simply can't have a squad where absolutely every area is fully covered for every eventuality.

You can't recall players on loans unless it's during a window though.

Having 4 senior midfielders and 1 high end youth player as back up is hardly going into the realms of a bloated squad though is it?

As i said there is the league cup and FA cup to consider as well as the additional subs rule.

I mean it's a bit of a fantasy, but if we are 2, or 3-0 up in a game he could come on then too for a bit of experience.

Also we've seen many players go out on loan and not get played properly, they can fall out of favour, be played in their wrong position or just simply hate it and not perform.

I think it just shows Bruno would rather go 4-2-3-1 than put cundle in a 4-3-3 if a midfielder gets injured.

He doesn't bring him on, that's the fantasy.

If he didn't come on against Fulham in those conditions and that situation he is never going to play at all as it stands.

I'd equate keeping him at this stage to spending £10 a month on household insurance covering an item that is worth £50.

We don't HAVE to play three central midfielders in every game. If we can't then we just won't.

Or to put it another way - we currently have three first team full backs to cover two positions.

You'll find very few people who think we should sign another one or we should have kept Marçal just in case.

The more positions that are needed to be covered, the higher the chance of an injury or suspension. We've seen when Raul got his long term injury how hampered we were.

Anyway, I'm not dying on a hill over this, it doesn't really matter.
