Summer 2021 transfer window

Us being in for Gunn seems an odd one, with Sarkic likely leaving and Ruddy likely signing a new contract, Gunn would surely have been first choice (assuming Rui is off).

Gunn is nowhere near the level of Rui, even last season's version.

Me neither, but *only* if his replacement is an upgrade. Currently the rumours suggest otherwise*

*but yes, only rumours at the moment, although Romano has mentioned our interest in Sa and he knows more than most

I must confess I don't know a lot about Sa, but can appreciate we would be going from Portugal's number one to someone who hasn't made an appearance for the national team.

International caps are always not the best to use for deciding upgrade/downgrade. Plenty of players who are decent have been ignored by their country.
France for example ignored Boly and instead selected Mamadou Sahko.

I don't want Rui to go but can see it happening if Roma are serious. I have no issues with Jose Sa coming in though if we or Rui put us in the position where we need to sign a keeper.

Better money this season for Rui than no money next season and having the exact same problem to solve.

Can't imagine Sa would cost very much either, and at 28 we can probably get a few good seasons out of him.

What sort of keeper is he? It'll be nice to have one who can command the area and distribute well, rather than just being a good shot stopper...

Well it can be looked at in a couple of ways couldn't it.

Cashing in when you can, especially if the player wants to go or going with keeping them to get the club to get a position where they can attract a clear upgrade, accepting that you purchased a player who would have little to no sell on value anyway.

On this one, I don't think we are actively looking to move him on but aware the he might fancy moving on. All the rumoured links are not us actually putting in bids but more testing the water should we have to move.

All this constant talk of 'upgrades' is a bit computer game-y for me. Again, like with Nuno, Rui is spoken about as an unchanging constant, and assessed at his best rather by than his recent performances.

I don't know much about Sa, but maybe if we were interested in him it could be because we think he'd be a good fit, and still has some development room, he might have characteristics Rui doesn't have that may suit the new manager and style, despite not being as much of a 'star'

I just think it's the end of an era and players will leave as we turn the page. Notable that in his interview Jeff spoke about players getting stale and needing a fresh challenge every 3/4 years

Rui does command his area. He just doesn't do it in a Matt Murray style we all crave and his distribution is decent. His issue when he first joined us was his inability to kick a backpass under pressure (or no pressure) and he either miss his kick or spannered it side ways. After about 6 months that issue started to go away (goals caused by his 5 year old kicking = 0). When he wants he can ping a lovely pass but he was also hindered by put every goalkick on Doc or Donck.

but again as with the manager it would be turning to one bloke and saying 'who you got?

Oh yeah, but that's the road we've been down for a while now, and there's no denying it's been pretty successful for us. If you look at the list of Gestifute players we've had there aren't many that haven't been a relative hit.

As i've said, this new era may see us pushing this relationship too far, remains to be seen.

Yep, everything has multiple angles. The pragmatic part of me says I'd rather have money, than not having money when attempting to fix a problem.

Rui may well have an awesome season for us, but then again, he might not.

I'd cash in and replace, based on last season's Rui. If we don't, we could end up with a below average keeper, on £100k per week and end up letting him go for nowt.

Undoubtedly. When you are a Championship or newly promoted club leaning on the biggest agent in world football makes sense. He's going to be offering you the type of player you are unlikely to have access to otherwise - Rui being a great example. When you are an established one, which is what Jeff thinks we are, then it's limiting your options and therefore reducing the chances of getting the best fit.

Anyway at the moment it's all conjecture

Xhaka is off to Roma, so will be interesting to see what happens with Neves from here.

I wouldn't be surprised if we went in for someone like Florentino who played alongside Vitinha for Portugal U21s and looked a decent player by all accounts. He played for Lage at Benfica B and for the first team.

Important to mix it up though, younger inexperienced players with experienced ones
