Summer 2021 transfer window

To me, it's part of being owned by who we are. We buy young talent , nurture it and sell it for a healthy profit, at least that's the intention! Neves deserves to be on a European stage every season and if we cannot offer it then why should he not want to go where it can be offered? He has already been here longer than I thought he would be. It is why it surprised me at times, we didn't see the carabao cup as an opportunity in the past. Now its some conference rubbish its not worth the hassle! If Neves went it would be a 35m minimum and that would be the basis of a war chest for the new manager , I presume. Until we are a regular Europe qualifying side I would estimate our best players will have about a 3 years shelf life here , even with Jorge Mendes' input. The Mendes-go-round is a real thing in my opinion, and is mutually beneficial for all parties and that includes us fans. 5 years ago you would NEVER have thought Neves, Moutinho, Patricio, Jimenez would have rocked up at dear old Wolverhampton to ply their trade! Fosun comes with a price and it probably is one worth paying. We just need to keep sight of the reality that being owned by them with their Mendes involvement, means. It really is no bad thing for us fans given the alternative. We had years of the alternative , judged it and found it wanting remember.

Just thinking about the out on loan players I was surprised to see such interest in Mir. 17m value and Atletico interested. Jordao and Vinagre is another 15m to the coffer for a new manager. If Neves and Moutinho leave its not inconceivable that we have 80-100m available to rebuild the squad at a time when prices are lower. Purely hypothetical, but it didn't look too bad. We just have to do a better job of recruiting this summer than the last .

if thats the model going forward, does that mean we're settling for being a mid table team with the occasional cup run?

Not necessarily. Leicester regularly sell their best players for big fees.

It's the recruitment side you need to get right. If you do you can still challenge.

Time will tell. That is still no mean feat. I would guess that Leicester is the aim rather than the big 6. If we play good football , entertain and attract both fans and players it may well be as far as Fosun want to invest. What is clear to me , this week , is they don't want to spend money on a product that does not attract either fans or players. This season has showcased some really average football in comparison to the previous 3. I understand there are mitigating circumstances, but even those cannot account for some of it. I am pretty on the fence to be fair. I see the fans side and the sorrow at seeing Nuno go: I see the owners side with the Return on investment required. What I want to see is a positive rebuild of identity and playing style that addresses a number of our concerns this season and that includes buying and selling players. I do not see much happening until a new Manager is announced , naturally.

Leicester have got a good structure in place though with football people making decisions. If we sold our best players would you trust the Wolves hierarchy to get good replacements given their recent track record?

You'd think Jorge would have plenty of really good young players on his books, or know how to get to them. Plus we should be a decent proposition for any youngster on our scouting network. If that's the way we are going to go that is. If they see we buy them and play them like Neto, Silva etc. Then we should be a good sell. Though if you want to be like Dortmund you have to pay through the nose for the best youngsters.

Leicester have put on an absolute clinic in that sense - knowing when to sell is equally as important as knowing when to buy when you aren't funded by a state or an oligarch.

We've done a very good job in bringing in £30m + on Costa/Cav, but I can't accept £35m as being good business for a player of Ruben's calibre.

According to the Part One transcript on the OS - Ruben is contracted until 2024, not 2023.

Yeah, I need to clear this up because Max, our head of media, was talking to me about this. I think in the press or our fans are thinking he’s only signed up to 2023, but in fact he is on contract until 2024, so he’s still got another three years, so fans don’t need to worry that he’s going to be going anywhere, or he’s going to be out of contract any time soon. So, yes, he’s still got another three years on his contract.

So will we be saying goodbye to Neto and Silva this time next year?

At this point I think it's safe to assume the Neves story for £35m is rubbish

Two points here. It is quite possible that we will lose players like Neto next year if they continue to perform at this level and we do not win trophies, qualify for Europe or win the league. The best players will always go to the most successful teams as every player wants to win things. Giggs only stayed with Man United because they won stuff. It is a conundrum. If we want to consistently challenge the big six we have to be on a similar financial footing and we just aren't.

Neves story may well be rubbish but it is absolutely no surprise. He may well stay but I guarantee you he will not be a Ryan Giggs unless we become much more like Man United in the trophy department.

A few things - if any club that is qualifying for the CL and possibly EL on a regular basis comes in for our players at a realistic price then they will go.

If we qualify for the EL next season and Liverpool come in for Neto, then Neto will go to Liverpool.

Hhhmm, it`s the way it is now I guess. Similarly some of us dreamed of a long managerial relationship with Nuno, a la Ferguson but it isn`t the way nowadays.

That's how it is, you either plan for it or you don't. Either way it will happen.

Repeating what I said the other day, but the Leicester model only works if you have Chilwell's and Thomas' coming through your Academy system or you are prepared to go to Hull and buy a Harry Maguire. Buying teenagers from abroad for multi million pounds is not that model. Not necessarily wrong, just different

as long as you get more through sales than you spend on replacements then I think it works. Leicester has smashed it out of the park so fair play. Neves / Neto could be the ones who go for significant sums on a par with what Leicester have got.
