SACKED!!!

From that Fenerbace fan, he really doesn't sound much better.

Wrong starting XIs, waits too long to make subs, his teams don't score many, falls out with every man and his dog, constantly writing in his notepad instead of the game, hates criticism and sulks at the media.

It's a huge gamble, but I guess that's where we are right now. He might be alright, he might be a disaster.
It's a risk whoever we get, it's where we are in the pecking order, but to say he's no better than O'Neil is surely a stretch.

We were 100% going down without a change so from that point of view there is no gamble.

I've just been looking through the Reddit thread. The amount of fans of other clubs (you can usually see their club by their flair/tag) that think these things just means it isn't his fault. Like FFS he's still the manager and we aren't a team of total cloggers, plus it spreads way back into last season

- doing a good job
- did well last season
- owners sold players and didn't replace
- they looked good against us
- had the worst start ever

I suppose it's all they see. The only people who see it all are fans of the particular club who watch every game and read forums etc. Plus the pundits loving him

Plenty of replies from Wolves fans correcting them. Been wondering if any of you lot are :D

The biggest gamble they made was giving GON a 4 year deal on the basis of one season coming 14th.
Meant they felt obliged to persist with him and in turn committed PL suicide by acting to late.

Hobbs should be sat wondering how the fuck he’s still employed to.
All you had to do was wait 6 matches before realising this was a failed project.

O'Neil didn't work out but it's not like we had much choice with 3 days until the start of the season and severe financial restrictions.

Plus working under Shi must be hell. Constantly sticking his oar in, changing his mind with the phases of the moon, and telling you you've got no money to sign players. I doubt Hobbs is amazing but he's likely been hamstrung by the Chinese Coco The Clown since he got the job.

As I've said previously I'd be interested to see how many of these fans of other clubs would be happy with O'Neil as their manager.

I thought at the time it was harsh that Bournemouth sacked him but when it was revealed we were after him I thought it was a shit appointment

Ultimately you're never going to know unless you live through it, unfair to have a go at other clubs' fans because why would they know.

I had a load of it in the Lage days. "8th aren't you, can't be that bad". Yes it is that bad my friend. And it'll come home to roost.

Though I didn't like the appointment I could understand that we were losing our manager a few days before the new season and needed someone prepared to step in at short notice.

However I'd have happily done a 'Bournemouth' at the season's end and waved him farewell and appoint someone better. Instead we gave him a new contract 'in case England came calling' 😆😆

This is the thing, Bournemouth fans had exactly the same conversations Wolves fans are having now (albeit things weren't as bad there as they are now here).

When we appointed him I kept having people insist to me that it was a good appointment because of his record at Bournemouth - he'd done a good job under hard circumstances, he'd earned more time and the board were unfair to sack him, he was playing good football with a poor squad, etc. Didn't matter that Bournemouth fans thought he was poor, didn't matter what his actual record was, because most fans only pay attention to their own clubs and gather the rest of their impressions from MOTD and other stuff half-remembered from social media. (Not that we're immune from the same blinkers ofc.)

Seeing the same dynamic everywhere right now. People who have kept hearing pundits say GON is a good coach who's had his best players sold out from under him, who also had to deal with the hardest fixture list in the history of the top flight, and last season he didn't just keep "relegation candidates" (spare me) Wolves up, but did so comfortably in 14th... Well, sounds like whatever's gone wrong, it's probably not his fault, right?

Meanwhile we've been going feral over here undergoing our very own version of the Ludovico Technique, forced to watch week by week as a poor coach over-promoted above his abilities managed to take a functioning squad and progressively enshittify it.

I've seen that a few times, I don't believe it. They gave him a new contract because Hobbs and to a lesser degree Shi thought they'd struck gold despite evidence to the contrary and the one he was on was below PL levels. GON wasn't ever going to be England manager, I don't think his odds were ever shorter than 40/1. He was a patsy, but within that played his bosses and the media pretty well. He's many things, stupid isn't one of them

No I don't think so either Tone hence the inverted commas.

We have been repeatedly told that Shi and Hobbs thought O'Neil was the next big thing despite the evidence to the contrary and as you say he was more prepared to dance to their tune than a more experienced manager. They were desperate for him to work out

This is the kind of fire we need! All onboard the Victor train now - other clubs already hate us, but if we’re now revisiting the Mendes link, fuck ‘em. All for one, one for all and all that.

(Gaz had drained the life out of me so I’m trying the positivity approach instead!)

O'Neil and Lage are the managerial version of the idea of Fabio Silva. Trying to get a wonder kid (manager) early in the cycle of their career.

Issue is they went 0/3 on the thinking on those decisions.

One of the journos earlier was saying he is a Mendes client

Redditors basically scathing about the guy. Which gives me hope -we need points, not friends

But you don’t give him a 4 year deal before a ball is kicked
