Relegation Thread 2023/24

They've only been anywhere near danger 2 seasons out of 12 though (will be 3 out of 13), not like they've been clinging on for over a decade. They were looking at competing with Spurs/Arsenal for much of that time rather than being concerned about getting to 40 points. Most of those years you wouldn't have had them anywhere near the conversation before a ball was kicked and rarely did they enter it afterwards.

Palace are more of an outlier, not a big club, not huge spenders, went up in 2013 and haven't ever really been close to going down.

Burnley pick up their first win of the season 2-1 at Luton.

Bournemouth 2nd last now with Sheffield Utd. bottom .

Luton's form in their last three games is not bad at all . They have been more than competitive . They are far from nailed on to go down .

Eh? They lost to a Fulham side who look like they'll be in a relegation scrap themselves, lost at home to Burnley last night, played 50 minutes against 10 men v us and needed a penalty to scrape a draw - and managed to win v an appalling Everton. That's 4 points from 4 matches against direct rivals and they're not getting a kind run of fixtures like that again. In the middle of all that they also got knocked out of the league cup by Exeter, who currently sit 10th in league 1 (and we all know how we felt getting knocked out to the team who are top of the championship).

They're an appalling Premier League club and in every way, look like a club nailed on to go down.

Their only saving grace as far as I'm concerned, is that there's some absolute dirge in the PL this season - but I still think they'll go down comfortably.

I agree with Jinky, they'll continue to work hard and to pick up points against some bottom half sides, but ultimately they lack quality. Conceding a few seconds after scoring last night is amateurish even if it was a good hit. Burnley winning was probably the worst result from Wolves' perspective.

We'll see Jinky . Still early days .

When I say they are not nailed on to go down , I'm not saying that they'll finish mid table , I still think it will be a struggle all season , but finishing 17th is a successful season for them .

' Appalling ' is a bit strong though........they got there on merit , didn't break any rules or had to rely on another club having points deducted .

They’re better than I expected them to be but they definitely got lucky against Everton and us (in terms of decisions at least).

They won’t be Derby esque, but they won’t have enough to stay up I think they’ll get between 25-30 points.

Depends if all the dross at the bottom beat each other or draw and on how many shock results like ours against City occur.

Average over the last 10 years for 3rd from bottom is 33.7, so 34 is the average to stay up. The most would have been 38 across that period
Although I think Albion in 04/05 are the only team to ever *actually* get so few points (34) and stay up.

They are. Last time Burnley went, 28/29 would have been enough dependent on goal difference

I think you can be simultaneously nailed on to go down without embarrassing yourselves. That's where I view Luton. They'll probably get the odd good hiding but there's a lot of pride and togetherness there that will keep things respectable and give them a couple of moments.

This is said every year isn't it? And it usually ends up being around 35 points.
Oh I accept it is likely to end up up being in the 33-38 area to survive but a lot of people saying there are more really poor teams this season. Early days obviously, so it may 'normalize' by Xmas.
