REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

As for a divorce l it is quite appropriate to pay what we signed up to pay as a member up to leaving

Which is fine, but then you have to accept that the trade deals we get will be considerably worse than what we have now.

True freedom is the freedom to starve.

They may do in some instances. The EU as a bloc will want to continue good trade with the UK France and Germany in particular. I think I need to see a proposal for how freedom of movement is ended before I say how damaging or otherwise it will be

It just seems insane to impoverish a whole country simply because some people dont like foreigners being here.

I wouldn't trust this current government with coming up with a way of reducing immigration. 7 years they have had to reduce immigration, they haven't. We still have more non-EU migrants coming here than from the EU so whatever rules they have in place currently aren't working (for their plans I must add, I have zero problems with immigration or free movement) Stopping freedom of movement isn't going to dramatically reduce numbers imo.

And to pick up the point some on here have made, it's not in the interests of the big corporates (and a lot of smaller businesses) to have immigration come down. Any government will have to balance the desire of a section of a population to see immigration fall and the economic requirement for that immigration. Whether you agree with it or not, at the moment immigrants are essential to the running of many companies and public services.

Will you stop with this foreigners crap vis. You're putting words in my mouth again. I am not anti foreigner , quite the opposite. I cannot get my head around the EU principles that make it beneficial for a Romanian or Bulgarian tradespersons to come to the UK and do the same job for 4 times the pay at home while still under cutting the British worker. That system us madness! Its why the Romanian architect became a UK bin man ! Freedom of movement between broadly equal countries can work but I would argue 40% or more of the expanded EU are not equal. Therefore there is no incentive for our tradespeople to go there to work for their wages making freedom of movement a one way street. We are a great proposition for them to improve their lives and standards without a quid pro quo. If you want an example see Spain where we Brits happily go to retire but rarely go to work outside of the tourist industry. The figures for Brits migrating to any of the eastern bloc EU countries shows a real deficit.

I would not either hence why the lack of a viable alternative is even more damning!

It does not impoverish a whole country. High levels of immigration without the infrastructure in place to cope with it, helps drive down the living standards of many British citizens.

Lack of investment in infrastructure isnt the fault of te EU.

Leaving the EU seems like a blueprint for the likes of Dr Liam Fox to drive down the living standards of those in the UK even further. How can that be a good thing?

I can vote against him in the next election, I only had one chance to vote against the EU and I took it.

Do you agree that high levels of immigration was helping to lower the living standards of the low paid in the UK?

No. Its been helping our frail and elderly have some dignity in their old age, farmers to have a source of labour to harvest their crops, the hospitality industry to serve their customers, the NHS to fill positions that without which would cripple the services on offer and the construction industry to keep building. I could go on but my main thrust is that we'd all be fucked if all those who have been welcomed to our country in recent years were to leave their positions of employment and piss off home.

First of all, nobody on here is asking anyone to go home. Did you read about the 20 Bangladeshis getting shot at in Greece, because the Greek farmers wouldn't pay them their wages?
Do you think the Greek workers are too lazy too? Who collected the Greek fruit, before the Bangladeshis arrived? Why do you think Greek farmers prefer Bangladeshi workers?

Theres huge amounts of research that suggests that immigration doesnt drive down living standards - its essentially a source of labour (i.e taxes) with a comparatively small debit side (small NHS usage, education etc)

This must be the fourth time this has been explained to you.

But you are wrong. Tell me what benifit high levels of immigration has done for the low paid?
