There is something right about seeing the word “threads” around Brexit. Feels prescient.
I agree with all your saying regarding trying to acclaim brexit for it but it's gotta be a good thing that part of the deal means we get some investment? The Brexiters have been crowing about a fantastic new car deal coming to the UK, but is everything what they are claiming?
Here's the Express putting their usual "take that, Remoaners" slant on things.
Again it would be fantastic if there was a £6 billion deal going spare.
And there is... just not for us.
You see, this new joint venture isn't being built from scratch.
No, it's a marriage of convenience between parts of Renault and parts of Geely, coming together to develop 5 million ICE and hybrid engines a year.
Like two well established singletons tying the knot, each is introducing a lot of existing resources to the relationship.
Geely are contributing nine production plants. Eight are in China, and one is in Sweden.
They're also bringing on board two R&D centres, one in China and one in Sweden.
For its part, Renault, through its brand-new HORSE venture, is contributing 8 production sites and 3 R&D sites (in Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil and Chile).
So let's do the sums:
Geely: 9 plants, 2 R&D centres
Renault: 8 plants, 3 R&D centres
That's 17 plants and 5 R&D centres
Here's the Express again: "The new plan will employ around 19,000 workers at 17 engine factories alongside five research and development hubs."
That's right: every last location connected to the new business is accounted for. All are outside the UK.
So what's the UK angle? Well, the venture is considering establishing its HQ here, i.e. a building full of admin staff.
A very far cry from those frothy news stories.
So the elephant was a mouse. Is that the end of the story? Can we all go on with our day?
Not quite yet. Let's first take a brisk stroll past all the Tory MPs who misled the HoC about the extent of the project.

It'd be great if there was and it also had virtually the same access as that given by this "new" deal...If only there was a trading bloc to join closer to home?
If only the previous agreement with Europe was confined to trade, and not to include politics and European army, just like it was when it was first madeIt'd be great if there was and it also had virtually the same access as that given by this "new" deal...
The European army doesn't exist. If only the previous agreement with Europe was confined to trade, and not to include politics and European army, just like it was when it was first made
But it might have done, Turkey might join and the moon is made of cheese. The European army doesn't exist.
But it might have done, Turkey might join and the moon is made of cheese.
My mother and father in law bought into this nonsense when they had the leaflet pushed through their letterbox.
Sadly people bought this kind of shit.
Yes mate, Iraq are joining the EU. U NEVA NO.
You know there was a European Parliament with ELECTED representatives, don’t you?So European army was never discussed then. I recall reading to the contrary. The point I was making was that when the 'common market' was formed, that's just what it was. It developed into politics, courts, at least discussion regarding European army. Had the Common Market continued to exist as a Trade agreement, Brexit would never have happened. That was the result of power hungry, unelected persons which were always going to be dominated by Germany, directly or indirectly
