REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Really????

That surprises me.

How about Leave v Remain????

Although polls have been known to be utterly wrong rather regularly over recent years!

And Boris pulls the deal, no doubt praying that the EU won't give him an extension.

Child.

He's paused it not pulled it. Seems he's going to ask Macron and Merkel for a 10 day extension to give Parliament debating time. Not sure that will be acceptable to the Commons though

Paused not pulled. He's waiting to see what the EU do. Labour's problem is that if they get a 3 month extension they can't run from an election. Best hope now is an amendment and finally we get a second referendum.

He actually CAN'T pull it under the rules of Erskine May. He can only pause it and it just sits there in the air until the end of the parliamentary session.

Nigel Farage said:
Do or die is over, we have now moved on to dying in a ditch. We will not be leaving the EU on 31st October.

Quite perceptive. Although IDS is asking if weekend and all night sittings can still get it done.

The fact that Rees-Mogg has now scheduled two days to debate a Queen's speech that will be utterly meaningless as an election is clearly coming shows you all you need to know about that idea.

Bercow basically re-phrasing the dead parrot sketch about the bill was rather amusing.

Maybe a life on the stage will follow. Does impressions too and did both Tony Benn and Willie Whitelaw in the house yesterday.

I see no reason why not. He needs a career after 31 October when he is stepping down. Strangely I will miss his short-arsed form perched on the woolsack bellowing order every time one of Boris or his mates tries to pull a fast one.

Really he will probably end up doing a lot of after dinner speaking in the States. They seem to love him over there. He is probably rather better at it than Saunders so all is well.

There are some seriously scary times ahead.

55% of the money in the Uk is with 1% of the porpulation. Who all vote tory. Politicions dont run the country the money runs the country. Dont ever believe otherwise however plausible the leader.

The idealistic idea that if brexit is scuppered , a labour or liberal government is elected, the second referendum overturns the first, we remain in the EU and the world keeps turning, everything is forgotten is a complete crock.

Whats happens in reality more likely is , as I have said for months, a general election is called The tories get back in, Brexit party picks up the UKIP , euro sceptic tory and anti Corbyn labour votes ,holds the balance, The DUP loses its influence, Labour voters defect to liberals because of Corbyn and you then have a majority to take us down a no deal route. So you have a tory Government , propped up by Brexit party probably in coalition with Boris. Farage in the Nick Clegg role of deputy prime minister and every one seems completely content to make this happen.

Nightmare.

Good luck to the EU in that scenario. Germany could follow suit with a surge in far right thinking, and plenty of others would start to have EU doubt. The whole lot would be a mess. And we inthe UK would end up with a worse far right thinking coalition that we had with Maggie. All becuase of Cameron and a referendum promise meant to destroy anti EU feeling. I fear that it will come to pass that it has done exactly the opposite and inflicted terrible damage on this country and europe.

Please be wrong.

Farage has to win a seat for that scenario. Not to say that he won’t, but he needs to pick his seat to fight personally very carefully.

You would imagine his best choice for a seat to fight would be where labour are defending a small majority, the constituency was heavily pro-leave in the referendum, and the sitting MP has consistently voted against leaving.

He might find it a little easier in a Conservative marginal but that doesn’t help the overall pro-Brexit majority plan. I suppose he could contest Bercow’s seat as the Speaker is standing down. However Boris will have targeted that seat in his majority calculations. There is no point going up against say Phillip Hammond. A split in the Conservative and Brexit party vote there could create the possibility of Hammond holding on as an independent.

As you have seen. Boris with a deal thats May minus 5% is heralded as a hero of the brexit revolution. So many people are sick of the whole brexit debate and they, rightly or wrongly, feel that they have been backed into a corner. So Farage and his rhetoric is gaining ground, once again. We have seen protest votes before with UKIP. Brexit is a single issue party and as it would be the number thing on the election agenda Farage would just need to be Farage and get votes. I think he would be a shoe in this time in the right area. In fact, dont be surprised if some deals were done before an election to cover off a coalition. If your Tory MP is a remainer in a brexit supporting area, dont select them and let Brexit party stand.1. Saves the embarrassment, 2. The people get what they deserve or want in that constituancy.

As I say , I fear 2020 will be awful and will change the whole face of europe for the rest of my lifetime.

I still hope I am wrong.

Liberals and Labour need to sharpen up and quick or they are going to be totally blind sided by this

You’d imagine most of Europe are not as stupid as our idiots who voted for Brexit. Almost everything bears this out - most Europeans think our Brexiters are morons who were hoodwinked.

Codswallop - Every current Conservative MP voted for the withdrawal agreement - Why would the conservatives deselect them and hand the seat to the Brexit Party? Most of the 21 who were kicked out a few weeks ago voted for the WAB too.

This. European nation populations are generally favourable towards the EU by a margin of around 2/3 to 1/3. And our experience will have killed any appetite for any more exits. Why on earth would you put yourselves through it?
