REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Johnson's leadership campaign is looking to be chaired by Lynton Crosby...

Have you ever been to Wales?

The reason that there is deprivation in south wales is $#@! all to do with Europe. It is wholly to do with the main heavy industry in the mines being utterly $#@!ing devastated.

Yes, I went there a few months go. I had to gobto Pembroke docks. Beautiful part of the world. I used to go to Nolton Have every year, when I was a kid. Beautiful countryside and the people have hearts of gold. I go to Newport and Neath a lot too.

Quite. Maybe THM would like to contact Holly and tell her she's a bad loser. She's a loser alright, 75% of her business since last week.

Or maybe he'd like to address his 62% of allies in Ebbw Vale and congratulate them on possibly NOT having those 6000 jobs created with the MotoGP track should the finances disappear?

What's going on with that link? Anyway, to add, people are already being laid off in smaller business in Wales since Thursday (and yes, I'm being serious).

Meanwhile, we've been described as Switzerland with nukes

German MEP Christian Ehler, a member of Angela Merkel's Christian Democrat Party, says there is "no other way" for the UK to start negotiations other than by triggering Article 50.

There will be "no back door" and no informal negotiations, he tells The World at One.

He suggests that the UK cannot be "Switzerland with nukes and a global perspective", adding: "We are going to expel Switzerland at the beginning of the next year from all of the European programmes" because the Swiss people rejected freedom of movement in a recent referendum.

Why should we treat anyone else differently than we treat Switzerland?"

Maybe Boris you shouldn't be outlining future government policy in a paid column? Just a thought.

Mind you 'policy' is a generous label to hand to 'we're going to keep all the stuff that benefits us and lose all the concessions we make to get those benefits'.

This kind of rhetoric from Germany isn't helping anybody. It gives an almost credence to the racist, xenophobic bigots stance and they will lose friends very quickly especially the Dutch and French.

The more I look at it the more it looks like it is the end of the EU.

Good. Glad you like it. And your views on why there is deprivation? All the disused pits are a bit of a clue.

The pits started closing down over 40 years ago. Wales has recieved a lot of Subsidies, like Liverpool and parts of the Midlands. Still lots of deprivation, these subsidies haven't significantly improved the regions.

What were you expecting?

If this is the end of the EU then expect much, much worse to come.

What should have been done to revitalise these areas?

So the logic is to cut all the subsidies altogether? I don't follow.
