REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

So what happens if a new Labour Party is elected later this year and they don't invoke Article 50 ?

Suspect we won't leave the EU after all ..

Easy to answer. I was referring to 'workers rights' not Thatcher's attack on the working classes. All those screaming to remain in the EU because of the protection of workers rights ?? The EU didn't and doesn't protect workers rights. Barbara Castle did more for Workers Rights (Prior to the EU)

Not only that, we have much better workers rights than many countries in the EU.

Yes, i do. The Nimrod one is finished with. We both drew a line.

ffs
can i remind you that the "drew a line" concerned your wild suggestion that i had shown no interest in truthfulness in politics which i disproved with a previous post, something i shouldn't have to do if points were dealt with on their merit rather than with attempts of deliberate antagonism. we drew a line because you gave a form of apology. let's not reopen that - it didn't have anything to do with a question.

The point surely is that EU legislation and directives underpin workers' rights and at present, there is absolutely no way any UK government can take any steps to revoke them (although they can tolerate and promote zero hours contracts, if they were so minded to have a dismissive attitude towards the working poor, perish the thought). Post-exit there is nothing to stop those rights being revoked if legislation is passed to do so. No barrier to it at all except Parliament. Now you might not think this is a concern - because what right minded person would trample over fundamental, long-held, basic allowances that are in step with common decency - but have a look who's leading this bright new world and what comments they've previously made about cutting 'red tape'. It's shorthand for making it easier to sack people, or discriminate on gender, or cutting away any other number of things that we take for granted. I wouldn't worry about this if we weren't about to be led by numerous proven sociopaths.

Exactly that. The referendum isnt legally binding, and if Labour were elected on a manifesto promise to not invoke A50 then thats that.

I didn't bring it up someone else did.

Any party that wishes to gain a UK vote will have to set out these workers rights. How about a ' workers charter ' ?? Surely a vote winner in our democracy ??

Perhaps because they came into being after Thatcher had already left politics? I'm reminded of a FB post by one of West Midlands "finest", and fellow Wolves fan bemoaning EU red tape and interference while at the same time complaining the EU didn't help protect public sector pensions.

In theory yes. Unlikely in practice as the next Conservative leader will likely invoke.

I suspect we'll have an extended pre-invocation period where the cabinet office spell out exactly what will happen, along with lots of negotiations as to the outline of a proposed deal for leaving.

Then a second referendum which this time will be legally binding. Essentially 'Here are the terms we have agreed with the EU for a departure. Given these are you happy for the government to invoke A50?'. A yes vote = automatic triggering. Then two years to iron out the details and departure by 2020.

Again Barbara Castle's Bill wasn't passed. The HASWA was passed in 1974 when we were already in the CM.

For two years we are an active part of that undemocratic farce. It's up to the Germans to realign not the debt ridden EU members.

Undemocratic or not, if you want access to the EU market you'll have to pay just as much as Norway which, per capita, is the same amount as Britain today.

And I believe that The City's passport will be revoked as soon as Britain leaves.

I'm finding this leave not having a plan quite amusing. Why would you have a plan before a project has even started? The 'project' started on Thursday and team needs setting up, timeline creating and then the finer details put into place.

If Thursday was the date for us to pull out of the EU I could understand the hysteria, but it's not it could be 2, 3 or even more years away.

Of course you need a plan. Not to have any contingency whether the result is in or out is an abdication of responsibility.

Meanwhile, having given the establishment a bloody nose, Boris spent his Sunday playing cricket with Earl Spencer and writing his 250k p.a Telegraph column.

Plus ca change....

I didn't say that. I pointed out that there are people who fight for workers rights that we can vote upon in a UK election. The EU is irrelevant in that respect.

During this cricket match did Boris twat a 6 year old's slow underarm delivery for 6?
