REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

It's just plain dumb as much as anything else. As Kenny pointed out, it would include UK citizens working here. And presumably UK citizens moving to work in other EU countries are jumping the queue as well.

It's a fairly transparent attempt to remind a swathe of people just why they voted to leave - foreigners coming over here and nicking our women... sorry, jobs - whether that's the case or not (we can't ascribe anything but the highest moral motives to a leaver of course) it's clearly something Theresa believes to be true.

And given that may herself was a remainer until very recently, it's doubly cynical.

Moronic comment.
What 'race' are we talking about here?
Europeans? didn't know that was a race and if it is the British are part of it.
Because the well used phrase is dog whistle racism, not dog whistle xenophobia or dog whistle jingoism. It comes straight from the dog whistle racism playbook.
It's a feature of the left when they are under pressure scream racism.
Always the left's fault for you isn't it, even when it bears little relevance? Not that I am particularly left anyway, but please tell what "pressure" was I under when I posted?

Either the cabinet are off script this morning or there has been a change in tact to trying to get Theresa May's deal through the commons. May's deal or no Brexit?

Amber Rudd - It is my view that parliament, the House of Commons, will stop no deal, as Damian Collins already said earlier. There isn’t a majority in the House of Commons to allow that to take place.

Liz Truss - “I’m very worried about what the alternative looks like”

Chief Secretary to the Treasury @TrussLiz tells @EmmaBarnett the UK is in “serious danger” of not leaving the EU at all, if her colleagues don’t vote for Theresa May’s #Brexit deal.

That might get the odd arch-Brexiteer onside, but it almost guarantees that every remain Conservative MP will definitely vote against it. It really is beginning to look like there is a possibility that this might not happen at all.

From a strict parliamentary porcedure point, the chamber can't actually stop no Brexit, as it requires primary legislation to do that. However, governmental collapse could well be on the cards, and that would probably stymie the whole thing too.

Ken Clarke is backing the deal!

Because it is better than no deal. If no Brexit was on the table, then Ken Clarke would almost certainly vote for it.

Had to smile at Caroline Lucas today:
May: 'There's a risk of no Brexit.'
CL: "Whaddya mean, 'risk"? - It's what most of the country wants!'
(paraphrasing here, obviously)

Might be time to put money on a phoenix-like UKIP winning a seat at the next GE?

UKIP are virtually bankrupt, can't be bankrolled by Arron Banks again, can't use the same playbook again and it's unlikely Farage will come back.

That's why it will be phoenix-like rather than Lazarus like. I reckon someone will emerge from the ashes if we end up staying in.

So - it looks like Parliament are going to reject the T-deal. It looks like Spain are going to reject it if there isn't a change to the text about Gibraltar. It looks like the French have huge misgivings about fishing rights clauses, that are a massive red line for all the Scottish MPs wanting to keep their seats.

Suffice to say she appears to be better at running through fields of wheat than she is at negotiating.

This deal basically needs to be abandoned. Huge waste of time even trying to progress it.

At least Jacob Rees-Mogg has been castigated by the ERG. He gambled. He lost.

If Brexit didn't happen I think there'd be riots orchestrated by the likes of the EDL, Football Lads Alliance etc.

We can't pander to utter morons either. What kind of system is that?

How many could they realistically mobilise? Bearing in mind these groups are well scrutinised by the authorities.

Couple of hundred maybe, any more than that, they end up fighting each other, because if there's one thing the far right hate more than leftie traitors or foreigners,it's each other

You ought to have seen the Spurs Green Street wannabes that Jinks, Trips and I encountered outside the Steve Bull stand the other week. I couldn't stop laughing.
