REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

so we will continue to pay the eu until 2064, subject to the possibility of further payments being agreed as a result of brexit.

master negotiators.

Blue passports to be made in France....lolz

Which is just amusing. What's less amusing is TM's wilful misrepresenting of history:

“It is right that from autumn 2019 we will issue new blue and gold passports, which have always been the UK’s colours of choice for our passports. It is absolutely right that after we leave the European Union, we return to deciding the colour of passports that we want, not that the EU wants.”

As has probably been said on this thread before, blue passports only came into use in 1921 following an international agreement on a standard format. They were written in French. It's on the Government's own website ffs - https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2017/12/22/a-history-of-the-uk-passport/

What is really amusing is that anyone really gives a flying fuck what colour their passport is - its a convenient smoke screen for xenophobes who really don't like the colour of someone's skin or the accent the speak with.

Some belmer from the cabinet on bbc breakfast this morning when asked about this said it was down to EU rules why the contract has been awarded to a french company, and when we leave we will have the sovereignty to make our own rules.
There isn't a facepalm big enough.

Jeremy Corbyn sacks Labour frontbencher Owen Smith after he says there should be a 2nd EU referendum.

Top April fools work.

The CBI appear to not want divergence from EU rules/regulations, as it will restrict their markets access:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43719924
Diverging from European Union rules after Brexit will mean more costs than benefits for British business, a report by the CBI employers' group says.

In a survey of 23 industry sectors, the vast majority preferred continued close alignment with EU regulations.

Agriculture, shipping and tourism might benefit, but this was "vastly outweighed" by the impact on other sectors, the CBI said.

However, critics said the report just promoted the interests of big business.

The report, called Smooth Operations, suggests the UK could still exert influence over important regulatory decisions through continued membership of the many EU agencies - such as the ones governing aerospace and chemicals - in which other non-EU nations like Turkey currently participate.

CBI director-general Carolyn Fairbairn said there was no appetite on the part of business for a bonfire of regulations, and called on the government to prioritise evidence over ideology in the negotiations over a future trade deal.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/apr/18/disabled-people-struggle-to-afford-food-and-heating-study-says

Disabled people are being forced to skip meals and sit in cold homes in a climate of benefit and social care cuts, according to new research.

Analysis by ComRes on behalf of the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity shows almost a quarter of disabled adults aged 18-65 in the UK missed at least one meal in the last year, while a fifth said they were not able to keep their home warm.

Previous studies of disabled people by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the charity Scope show a considerably higher rate of deprivation than in the general population; in 2017, less than 8% of non-disabled people were in food poverty while those without disabilities have to spend half as much on energy bills as people with health conditions.

"almost a quarter of disabled adults aged 18-65 in the UK missed at least one meal in the last year" are you sure that's right ? I don't wish to appear a heartless b~stard but that doesn't exactly strike me as deprivation ?

I thought the same Paul. I missed a meal last week.

As in, you said "Sorry kids no dinner tonight, we just can't afford it due to my disability"?

I wonder what the EU think the current situation regarding windrush migrants, when it then listens to Theresa May (who implemented all the beginnings of these issues we're seeing) when she "reassures" EU leaders that EU citizens will be looked after?

Edit however Gove thinks we're now more welcoming of migrants since the brexit vote:

Has this fuckwit not seen any news, or the rises in hate crime since the vote?

Not Brexit related as such, but there are some horribly vivid parrelels between the aftermath of Enoch Powell's speech and the referendum result:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/after_enoch_powell

If you'd read that 4 years ago, you think it was terrifying and thankful that we'd moved on as a society. Now it's all too grimly familiar.

Yep, Wolves SW - my constituency. Currently held by Labour MP Eleanor Smith, the first black MP in the West Mids. Although the E&S have done their best to drag her through the mud and make sure she isn't re-elected.

With the government restating its commitment to leaving the EU's custom union, YouGov data earlier this year found that half of Brits (49%) aren’t confident they understand what a customs union is – only 9% said they feel very confident that they do.

If we were to apply the common external tariff on Irish beef, the Irish agricultural industry is in serious trouble. You’ve got to ask the EU: does it want to sacrifice the economy of Ireland on the altar of EU ideology? I my guess is that the answer is no, and therefore we are in a very strong negotiating position.

I do not believe that the interests of the collective allow you to crush individuals who may get in your way. I believe that we are a nation built on the individual, so that the rights of each individual are a valuable and important thing, to be protected by the government ...

I will draw a parallel with the Windrush issue. The Windrush issue came about because the state put the interests of the collective ahead of those individuals who had come here perfectly legally prior to 1973, and that it was more convenient for the Home Office to make them prove who they were and show their papers. This is socialism.

Jacob Rees Mogg today.
1 - I have total confidence in his negotiation skills, or not as he stalks about his own guessing - we surely don't make policy based on guessing and hunches, do we?
2 - How have the past 8 years seen the government "protect the individual"?
3 - wtf does he think socialism is?
