REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Defeat for the Government in the Commons over Parliament being able to do what it's there to do, ie pass laws.

Why are they still so shockingly arrogant, they have absolutely no cause to be that way.

Great, was a stupid idea anyway. It'll just drag on and on until eventually all the old people that voted for it will die,and then we just carry on as usual in the eu

Not fussed either way, just hate all the hyperbole from both sides.

Looks like Brexit will never happen.

Looks like it will never be pushed through OUR legal and executive system without the correct safeguards and scrutiny. You would think those "voting to take back control" would appreciate that.

It's been too long since the Mail echoed the Third Reich.

The Government lost, get over it.

Delighted to see my MP in that rogues' gallery. Might even vote for her next time.

Stephen Hammond sacked as vice chairman as a result of his vote. That simply confirms this isn't about what is best for the country, but best for individuals.

Being vice-chairman isn't really a big deal (there are fucking loads of them, like an American bank) and I suspect he wouldn't have expected to keep that post.

Although it does jar with how Patel/Johnson were dealt with after actually abusing their positions.

QT last night was a bit confrontational. And it appears Dominic Greive and co are getting ridiculous abuse:

Genuinely worried these years of austerity are contributing to a swing towards extremism, from all sides tbh.

It had some very nasty elements in the audience and Isabel Oakenshcott on the panel. Calling Nicky Morgan a traitor isn't on and when it was pointed out by a member in the audience that MP's are free to vote how they want in parliament and this is what taking back control looks like certain audience members boo'd and jeered.

I see 'the will of people' made its comeback too and some people really did think that because the vote was to leave the EU everybody had to think the same as them or they were to be stoned with the rest of the non-believers.

I was particularly amused by the woman who berated a landlord for owning and renting out homes and when he asked what she would like him to do all she did was shout 'profiteering' at him. The question was on social housing and why wasn't there enough of it.

He didn't help himself with his sneery intro "I'm one of the most evil men in the world, as a private landlord", the dick.

Agree though, there was a real nasty atmosphere at times, and Hopkins-lite enjoyed fanning the flames

Since the Brexit vote I can't watch Question Time any more, it's pretty much the same every week. Stupid people shouting out the same stupid phrases.

Greive makes an excellent and straightforward point in the article I linked:
He explained: “The vitriol is a symptom of the real problem, because everything is seen in the binary terms of either pushing Brexit or sabotaging it, stopping it.

“I and the other participants, whatever our views on the undesirability of Brexit are not trying to do that.

“We are trying to ensure that the Brexit which takes place is carried out in an orderly way.”
And he's right. I'm sure Vis has made exactly the same point on here. The lurch to extreme arguments by so many people is deeply worrying to me.

I make no apologies for wanting Brexit to be cancelled. It's a farcical concept that we are overwhelmingly unable to deal with.

And me. It has the potential to be the most disastrous political move this country has made in eons. But that makes me a traitor of course.

I wish Remainers would have the guts to drop all this 'respecting the referendum ' stuff. Why should it be respected? Not everybody who voted leave wanted to leave the single market so the idea that there is now a mandate for a hard brexit must be challenged. The vagueness of the option was the only reason leave won in the first place.

Also, let's just remind ourselves of this from the arch-respector of referendums and champion of democracy Nigel Farage:

"In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way. If the remain campaign win two-thirds to one-third that ends it." 16th May 2016
