REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Hopefully this is isolated, but possibly an indication of the Pandora's box that this referendum has opened. On a bus in leeds today, a young couple with an infant were happily talking to each other. They were talking in their native tongue, Polish. Two indigenous youths decided to verbally abuse them and basically inferred that as of today they (the young family) are no longer welcome in "Our country" as a result of last night's vote.

Cue an elderly guy (who later revealed that he was in his 80s) reprimanding the 2 youths for their attitude. Ensuing unpleasantness, racial slurs, threats of violence, the Polish mother heartbroken, fearful of her family's safety and eventually the bus driver stopping the bus and calling for the police who duly arrived and removed the 2 youths allowing the bus to continue on it's very awkward journey.

That is something to make you proud to be British. That is something to help raise the flag and declare "Independence Day".

The tip of the iceburg. We have now legitamised overt racism. Something that the right minded have tried to combat for decades if not centuries. Well done. Congratulations.

Voting to leave does not mean people are racists.

I find it strange how people who voted out are getting offended when people state that racist vote leave. This doesn't mean that everyone who voted leave is a racist, so why get offended?

Right minded people of whichever persuasion will always try to combat racism. There is no place for racism in society, and this referendum result does not alter that.

A saddening tale, but pleased that they were challenged.

Immigration is not the real issue (as numbers coming in relative to the initial population is not that untenable - merely that immigration hotspots have not been supported due to the 'adversity measures' that were seen as necessary - even though they weren't).

The insinuation that only white people are racist breeds resentment. People make money out of dividing people and putting them in quota lists. It's an infected side product of Socialism. That resentment produces votes like what happened today.
Anyone can be prejudiced, but racism on a societal scale massively benefits whites.

That's the last I'll say as I don't want this to turn into the Player Comparison thread.

Some people that voted out will have done so for reasons of race. SOME. No one knows how many but there are enough comments out there to show this is true.

When people mention that don't think or assume they are calling you a racist for voting out.

I have seen a few versions of that story today from different people in different towns and cities.

Regardless of whether the story is true or not (hopefully not) it isn't saying everyone voting out is racist.

It isn't a copy and paste. It was witnessed by my wife and relayed to me. She was a passenger on that bus. So my wife is a liar?

See LeedsWolf copy and paste comment.

I didn't say all leavers were racists, quite the opposite. I said the racists in society will feel emboldened, and will come out of the closet, and least for a while, as evidenced by Leeds' post.

I think this is actually slightly different. It isn't like a GE where the winning side still has to get policy passed and so on. This is much more monumental. A huge move in our political landscape, and it must be done as the people have voted for it.

Therefore, the period of time while there is an interregnum at the top needs to be used wisely in many ways.

a) Labour needs to decide if it wants to replace Corbyn. He is under huge sudden pressure but he isn't a dead duck yet.
b) We need a new Conservative leader but that will be an internal thing. That leader must come from the Brexit side of the divide or this just doesn't work
c) A sensible timetable for pressing the button on Article 50 needs to be thought out and elucidated to those who have voted for change so that expectations of speed of change are accurately managed
d) Somebody needs to go through the whole statute book and crunch exactly what legislation needs repeal or restatement. This is going to be a colossal statutory instrument when it arrives and is going to take a lot of writing.
e) A lot of budgetary work needs immediate re-assessment. The business as usual stuff is still ongoing
f) Someone needs to take this by the scruff of the neck in terms of strong leadership so that the markets can get shored up. When we know the likely bottom out position we can start building back up again.
g) People need to understand that market recovery from the positions of today is not going to be quick. If that isn't put out there then the government managing this is liable to get tossed out on its ear in 2020. There will be hardship in getting this done, but if that is stated up front it might be a little more palatable.
h) Somehow the 48.1% need to be engaged in this. You can't leave such a tight result without doing a little reconciliation to those have differing views. Cameron tried that after the general election and look where it has got him this morning.

Naturally we are from different sides of this debate but I pretty much agree with all your post. I have seen, like you, markets rise and fall. Whatever the result there was going to be a period of false positive or false negative. Its the true colours that will come out over the next three months. France saying they want Britain to go and go quickly was very telling. Malcolm Rifkind remain campaigner saying on 5 live that we should not have joined in the first place and have spent 20 years being a pain to the other big member states. Whilst I accept that some people have done this for the wrong reasons I do believe and have always believed that they have done the right thing for the wrong reasons. I will put money that the closing price for the £ against the $ on 22nd June 2016 will be no lower than the closing price on the 22nd June 2017 and be even higher come 2018. The same with the euro. The by product of this is that those in the EU who thought this remain was a done deal have to think again and hopefully that will lead to some moderation. As I have said from the start you are either all in or all out- none of these half measures . The next 2 years will be an interesting journey but one I believe will end up with us as a UK nation in a better position that we were as a member.
The markets have rallied slightly. The FTSE is 2.5 % down . In the greater scheme of things that could be made up by the end of July. The Bank Of England reacted well. It really is time for the UK to unite. Stop the talk of further break offs. Scotland do not want to leave. They know where their bread is buttered. NI wont want to leave. They just want a sensible border arrangement. There are some difficult but not insurmountable short term to medium term issues. But together we can get there. Now lets hope for a Home nation Euro 2016 win!

The more you label the more you breed division.

Thousands of people told the undemocratic EU to do one today. They weren't all white.

Thousands of people will also get rid of clowns like Johnson and take control some day soon.

As I said, the race industry earns many shallow people a lot of money. People won't be divided by people like you Alan.

All you need to do is look at the economic disparities between races in the UK to see that these "labels" aren't from nothing.

Likewise, ignoring someone's race is itself a form of racism, as more often than not you still hold them to white standards.

I'm really not sure there are race economic disparities in the UK.

Unless you live in Zimbabwe sir!

You Sir - are a racist !

True enough! Hardly the norm but it is a good example that societal factors can work both ways. Although in Zimbabwe's case it's a matter of blacks that are now in power seeking "vengeance" against the whites who oppressed them in the past.

A sad state of affairs in that country, to be sure.
