REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

We did it, whether you think we stormed the breech, or simply went headlong over the cliff, it's done, dusted and over.

So let'wait with our bus stop British patience and see what the hell happens next, congrats to the winners, I feel for the losers, but can we now just accept it's happened, and wait to see what happens next?

i just can't see how this can be agreed to given how critical that issue has been in this referendum. i'm not saying it won't happen but it would be a complete u-turn on what brexit is about and be seen in a treacherous way.

Agreed is your word - I believe it will be a condition of entry to the EU market. I voted to remain because I didn't believe much of what the leave campaign said. If their arguments been more honest my vote would have been to leave. I voted to remain because of the leave campaign. These are the people who are now entrusted with our future.

Indeed. I didn't vote as I'm unsure whether we were better to stay in or better to leave, but the stuff I keep reading from the remain about how they know what is going to happen in the future is quite frankly bullshit as no-one has a clue.

Had the result been the other way I'm sure the leave would have been the same, but the bitterness that is showing through is terrible.

Corbyn pulled out of Glastonbury.
Shame, i reckon he would have got a decent reception.

It would be nice to think that the EU subsidy of farmers - basically a payment for land that "could" be used for farming, (so kept clear of useful things like trees, hedges, wildlife etc) and only available to farms over a certain size so favouring big rich farmers - would be phased out, but the leave campaign have said they would continue to pay it. Farmers being good Tory supporters in the main.

Only the richer ones.

Perhaps they could now grow olives? Damn, missed the boat.

what i heard pre-vote (liam fox i think) was that a failure to negotiate agreeable terms to the uk of eu single market entry and "we'd be prepared to go it alone" whatever that means.

i don't see how representatives of brexit can campaign on the basis of needing to restrict eu immigration (control of borders) just to then give it straight back by agreeing to free movement of labour in order to get access to the single market.

obviously i can't say it wouldn't happen, but don't you think that was a major reason for brexit winning and would be seen as a betrayal of the vote?

Absolute fucking bullshit on your last point. Sorry for being bitter. A populace has been lied to, bought it and the country is now fucked. Damn fucking right I am bitter. And that will never change.

I never get that argument, we had it last year after the General Election. 'The Tories won the election fair and square, stop being bitter'. It's not being bitter, I thought the Tories would continue to lead the country down a path I think is deeply damaging in the long term and fosters division of society and stigmatisation of the poor, ill and vulnerable (as has turned out to be the case), am I supposed to put all those concerns in a box and not mention them again for the next five years just because they won? Same with this referendum. I thought leaving the EU would be a terrible idea 24 hours ago, nothing has changed except we're inexplicably actually doing it.

Yes, it would be a betrayal. But so would restricting British companies from accessing a huge market on their doorstep. Not one leave campaigner was ever able to say what a UK trade relationship would look like but I can show you exactly what other European nations outside the EU have to "agree" to.

I think the leave campaign was based on deceit so should the eventual outcome turn out to be a betrayal it shouldn't be a surprise.

I actually don't think airing your concerns is bitterness. It's stuff like this that is the bitterness I refer to.

we don't disagree. i just think the referendum vote and principles for the timebeing will take precedence. let's say they go in to negotiate and fail to agree market entry without a free movement condition. if they still believe it the right think to do, then that would be worthy of a snap election to get buy in on the basis that it's against the principles of the brexit vote. but rest assured farage will stand against free movement.

i think they must believe they can get market access without free movement, so pressure's on.

I find Politics full of promises and lies but your vote in any election is now massively credible without any outside influence. I honestly feel we will now have a new breed of Politician and they need to step up. That vote was as much anti-establishment as anything else. Issues won't go away but I'm damn sure the people are even more part of the democratic process than ever before. I never in a million years expected that vote.

How can we not take any notice of the racist undertones to a lot of the anti-immigrant feelings in the country? I am certainly concerned about it.

Certainly for a while the racists will feel comfortable coming out the closet. A bit like the US at the moment, emboldened by an openly racist candidate.

Are you trying to say the stay campaign wasnt based on deceit?

The problem with that, is that the leave camp, were able to predict doom and more doom in the future.
