REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Don't agree. I do believe the old industrialised north and midlands ( working class) did vote to leave the EU. That to me has always been the problem with the remain voters on this forum, you couldn't see it.

Workers rights in the EU. Tell that to the 62% youth unemployed in my city. I didn't see many workers rights, for the British workers, who have been overlooked time and time again.

Are they overlooked if they can't be bothered to apply for the jobs in the first place?

But that is in Spain. Nothing to do with Brexit really. Wolverhampton is an area of high unemployment. I should know - I have spent time as that statistic. I see nothing in this new world that suggests unemployment is going to suddenly improve. If anything things are going to get tougher for a bit.

And my kids have been denied the opportunity to find work in 27 other countries should they wish without visas that will be needed to do so now. I'm sure when I speak to them tonight they will be delighted to have had that chance taken away from them.

Opportunities to work in the other 27 countries? People come on their millions to work in the UK. I have always stayed in the south of England, when I come back to the UK. There always seems plenty of work there. Maybe companies have to move to where therr are workers, now, or unemployed people will have to move down south.
To be truthful Paddy, it's happened now. The People have decided. Try to look to the future with hope and opportunities.

Hmmm

My niece is just doing her GCSEs going to storm them. Only career desire to be an EU diplomat.

Bet she is chuffed.

But at least the Poles are going to be kept out.

As for your comment of "Maybe the unemployed need to move south" I can only assume that cloud cuckoo land is missing somebody. The cost of living in the south is prohibitively high for the well-paid let alone the unemployed.

i guess only if they take on roles that migrants would otherwise do, and there is the question of how likely that it.

i don't see much improvement for workers certainly in the short term - as discussed, no challenge to the City or big business - will be seen as important for existing employment. Potential risk to London losing trade if a Paris or otherwise wants to challenge it as a financial centre means likely further support (eg re-regulation) to the City to keep it competitive. We'll bring in more foreign property owners and London will probably be fine for those who can afford it. They'll probably support a national fracking industry with its promise of new jobs - this was happening to some degree anyway. And of course the continued courting of foreign investors to own new infrastructure projects - this was happening anyway. how much money have we got to do stuff anyway??

after all, the '£350m' periodic saving has been promised to the nhs, which means for the rest of the economy we're short by the total of the rebate.

I don't want to move down South. I might move back to Germany though, I reckon they'd take me back. Apparently someone like me being an immigrant is OK.

And then they all went home for tea.

Very low point. But, I have to agree with THM on the fact that it has happened, and we have to make it work. I keep coming back to that.

It can't be undone so those in charge have to make this the best UK it can be in these circumstances.

If they get their referendum I might move the family to Scotland

I was handling all this news quite well. Not getting angry with it as it was the choice of the majority. TV this morning seemed to have decent coverage, no MP or campaigner from Leave gloating (except for Nige) so all good.

Started to get a bit annoyed when 2 people were asked "So how do leave, whats the timetable" an the answer was basically a "Well we will find out as we start to look into it" Hold on, shouldn't that have been something to have ready to go with?? Then Midlands today did get my angry when speaking to a woman in Stoke on why she voted leave " Well, its all the immigrants isn't it. Coming over here all getting 4 bedroom house and everything else on a plate. had enough they shouldn't be coming here"
Fuck off, just fuck off.

You said you never saw the same problems when you walked out your door, where you live. A lot of people could see a problem. That is why we have voted to leave.

Well it didn't take long to call for the second referendum!

which was the symptom. the cause of their vote against the Leave campaign was not wanting that referendum. their wish is because they wanted to stay in their entirety and have been roundly ignored and their view counts for nothing.

Just out of interest when did someone give Nigel Farage the right to decide where Government money is spent?

Nige did. He shouts loud enough and repeats stuff enough people believe it.

I think a lot of the reason is

a) a very strident Leave campaign, honing in one main issue, that also made outlandish claims to influence the electorate that have been immediately withdrawn within hours of the polls closing, which is quite possibly the most cynical despicable tactic I have ever encountered, and I remember Keith Joseph in charge of education
b) the most wishy-washy flim-flam of a remain campaign hoist by its own petard of pious over-confidence that this was a formality when it wasn't
c) a pissed off electorate where large swathes wanted to deliver a punch on the nose who are going to find out that the consequences of that might not feel as good in a couple of years as they do now.
