REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/aug/22/brexit-means-brexit-when-is-big-question

Summary: nothing is happening and nothing will happen for a while. If at all.

Those of us who thought/think that it'll be a very bad thing for the economy weren't overly concerned by what would happen in two months, more like two decades. Nothing has changed for now given the penny has dropped that we can't just cherrypick the best parts of being in the EU and get rid of all the stuff we don't like.

It's pretty plain that now the dust has settled, no-one (who matters) other than the likes of Farage and IDS really wants to leave.

Only because its in a too tricky tray. MPs were always 4-1 in favour of staying and that makes it a dilemma for them. Trying to be passionate and positive about something you dont agree with is very hard for anyone. Even being neutral is tough. For example I am against fox hunting and always was yet had to police fox hunts to ensure no breach of the peace was done by protesters. It is hard to do but those charged with doing it do need to suck it up and move on. Out is out. There is no other way now.

I don't need google translate for this one. Japan is waving its willy around and actually its not that big! Of course its going to warn Britain its looking after its interests. But does anyone really think Britain is going to exit and not look to maximise opportunities? When push comes to shove it won't be the size of the willy that matters it will be the technique! Japan and others will always look at making money and given the capitalist govt it is likely that money making will be the heart of any brexit strategy.

Theresa May has rejected a points-based system for controlling EU migration, one of the key promises of Leave campaigners during the referendum.

Anything left from the Leave campaign that is true and will happen?*

*Please note, I am not moaning about the outcome and that the vote result has been acceptedon this side of the forum, so do not take my post as anything other than a general question.

I notice the economic news has been rather good this month - didn't several people state there would be an apocalypse by now just a few months ago?

Wait until we actually start leaving. We've done absolutely nothing yet.

The currency markets are still fucked and won't recover.

Yes we will be leaving the EU.

Trying to find the longest way of doing it though. Like a stubborn teenager, dragging their heels and refusing to do it

Yeah its all a bit Kevin the teenager! Getting sick of remainers protesting though. Cambridge demo. Stomach churning. Still in the too tricky tray in to many ways

Yes they will. History shows that. They would have recovered with any outcome other than nuclear war because people involved in making money are very good at...... Making money

OK, they *might* recover in decades to come. They won't recover any time soon.

You won't see any urgency to push Brexit through when the Government doesn't even want to leave. It will happen in some format eventually but it's going to be a withdrawal which satisfies no-one.

I completely disagree. It may be a slow withdrawal but it will be the dictionary definition of compromise as the exit needs to keep as many people as happy as possible. And it will.

Well not really, as I am extremely unlikely to be happy about signing away anything positive we had as part of the EU, and that probably applies to a good chunk of the 48% who voted to Remain. You can't placate that section because they've already rejected the 'benefits' of leaving.

Leave voters will be disappointed as the promises made have already been proven to be a load of bunk (shock horror).

You literally can't keep people happy on this one without indulging in political suicide. Maybe, just maybe it wasn't a great idea to drive a stake down the middle of the country in the name of internal party management.

Very true. However, we are where we are, and we need to find the best of it I guess. I am glad the points-based system has been binned. Taking immigration ideas from possibly the most xenophobic country on earth is unlikely to be the best idea.

Generally agree with this.

Not sure on this one. I think some of the deluded individuals who thought that money would go on the NHS for example, or believed the bullcrap being spouted will be disappointed. But I think they're a small minority. The majority, are either elderly(ish) and won't care too much, until it starts having negative impacts on their kids, or won't even care at that point. The other section of the majority will not care anyway, they got the out vote they wanted which will stop them darkies and poles and wotnot comin over here and we've got our country back blah blah.

Whatever the outcome, I don't think anyone is going to be genuinely happy.

Emily Thornberry yesterday:
“So far all we’ve learnt about Brexit is that the government is not going to introduce a points-based immigration system or give £350m per week to the NHS,” she observed. “Both of which were two of the key Vote Leave promises in the referendum campaign. The government has gone from gross negligence to rank incompetence. You’re making this up as you’re going along.”

I think the political calculation on the part of the Tories will be to trigger article 50 fairly close to the next general election. They'll then hoover up the votes of the brexiters who would feel cheated if it drags on too long, and any fallout will happen after the vote, and people's minds will have long since moved on to other things by the time of the 2025 election.

Emily Thornberry yesterday:

I think Emily Thornberry is either confused or deliberately misleading people. The government of the day did not promise any of those things it was the liars in the Leave campaign. Blaming the government when the cabinet position was to stay is pretty poor. Maybe she should look to Jezza for inspiration...
