Refereeing question

Despite the criticism that Mike Dean is getting following the Bournemouth v Manchester City game, he was correct to show Sterling a second yellow card. The laws state that players must be cautioned if they "approach the spectators in a manner which can cause safety and/or security issues".

And given that stewards were trying to keep the fans from spilling onto the pitch, I would suggest that Sterling acted in a way that could have caused safety issues.

Though it is fair to say that some referees would not have taken the stance that Mike Dean did.

Shouldn't be Dean that is getting the crap - The rule is stupid but it's his job to follow it.

Out of interest, did you think Rooney scoring on Monday and running towards the Man City supporters with his finger pressed to his lip was deserving of a caution? It could be considered provocative and had the potential to cause a safety/security issue?

Why didn't he book all 7 City players then?

My understanding is that as the goals order, Sterling dictated where the celebrations would take place. He chose to do so in front of the travelling Manchester City fans, causing them to surge forward, and forcing the stewards to react to ensure safety for fans and players alike.

Mike Dean will be marked down or censured because he followed the directive given to referees. Though I will say that Dean is probably the strictest referee in the Premier League. There are no grey areas for him, everything is black or white. Perhaps another referee would not have sent Sterling off.

Carlisle United's Shaun Miller is the first player to be charged by the Football Association since simulation laws were introduced in May.

Miller, 30, is charged with "successful deception of a match official", after an alleged "clear act of simulation" against Wycombe on Tuesday.

About time too, hopefully in time this will put an end to the blatant cheating that takes place.

Will they charge, say, Hazard (or insert any major PL star) when he does it though? Will be interesting to see.

Do referees at Championship level receive dvds of their weekly performance outlining things they may have missed so they start to rectify past errors?

They receive DVD's, though they are so the referee can look at his complete performance, and can see things that he/she got right, not just areas for improvement. When a referee is assessed, the assessor mentions areas where he excelled as well as areas for development.

There's a program on Sky On Demand of Neville and Carragher going on the referees training and evaluation, as well as running the line in a practice test. It was quite decent actually.

They all have to watch their own games on there and rate their performance, flag up mistakes, etc.

Salford City goalkeeper Max Crocombe was sent off for urinating during his side's 2-1 win at Bradford Park Avenue.

I wonder if he had already been cautioned, or if the referee showed him a straight red card.

He had to go....

It was a straight red.

Surely yellow would have been more appropriate...

Think a red was appropriate relieving yourself in front of 100s of people is highly inappropriate. It happened near to the end of the game also.

I remember many years ago at Ibstock Welfare F.C., as the players came out for the second half a player relieved himself on the pitch, this depots there being toilet facilities in the changing rooms. I cautioned him, as I thought that was the correct punishment. I must admit I was not aware that such actions were now a red card offence.
